Hi,

We are on the Millennium in a sky suite on 24 October. As we have a butler provided I was wondering what the butler does? What is it ok to ask them to help with? Is Ironing shirts ok? I have never had a suite with a butler so would welcome your experiences.

Thanks

Ian

He most definitely will NOT iron your shirt, but will be happy to take any ironing to the laundry where, for a nominal charge, they will do the ironing and then have it delivered back to your suite.

Your butler will (upon request) pack and unpack your suitcase, arrange for your shore excursions, serve afternoon tea and canapes from a rolling cart, serve evening hors d'oeurves the same way, arrange to have any problems in your cabin either fixed or replaced, arrange for housekeeping to fix or mend any missing buttons, take shoes away to be shined, bring you an evening cocktail from the bar, deliver requested VCR tapes or board games from the library, print out and deliver invitations to fellow passengers if you should choose to have a party in your suite, facilitate such a party by bringing in cheese, crackers, potato chips, glassware set-ups if you are serving drinks and, last but not least - serve any meal you desire (breakfast, lunch or dinner) in-suite. He will serve dinner (and only dinner) course-by-course, as they would in the dining room.

Give your butler 1-2 days notice if you plan to throw a party - as for dinner in your suite, let him know that morning if you wish to eat in. He will bring the regular dining room menu for you to make your selections.

In general, the thing to keep in mind is that the room attendant's job is to take care of your cabin, and a butler's job is to take care of you.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the posting. Very useful. SHame about ironing tho. Seems very backward having to work out a day ahead what needs ironing and send it down for ironing at a charge. Guess thats why I love P&O and the self service laundry. It take 2 mins to pop along iron the creases out of your shirt and put it on!

Cheers

Ian, Suites get priority service for laundry, dry cleaning and pressing. In an emergency (i.e. wrinkled tux) you can get pressing back in 1 day, but plan to send it early one day and get it back the next. It's not free, but worth it.... we always pack carefully, but don't have to worry about wrinkles... we just send them in when we first unpack.

You could always bring a travel steamer with you and press it in your cabin. We always bring one and we also use the laundry services while onboard. They do a great job and since you already know what type of attire to plan on wearing to the dining room the next day, one day really isn't bad as far as how long it takes. You put it in the laundry bag in the morning and it will be returned to your cabin the next day in time for dinner :thumb

Well, we had our first suite...or Suites (We had #6122, the kids were in #6124)...on the Summit this past July...
Truth is that we've never felt "not pampered" cruising in ordinary cabins...
The butler thing is a it of overkill...We're not really sure what to do with all that help...
I don't think we ever actually opened our own doors...

The kids used the Butler more than we did--had him bring them breakfast in their suite most mornings...and DVDs for the DVD player...

Best thing our butler did for us was to keep track of our kids...he could usually tell us when they woke up, where they went, etc.

Between the Butler, the Cabin Steward and the Assistant Cabin Steward, there was never a problem with getting anything we wanted...

We'll be back in an "ordinary" veranda cabin this next cruise and an inside the one after (unless the upgrade fairy strikes)...so, no Butler...but we're not worried about a lack of service--not with Celebrity...

Re: First time either on a cruise or in a suite!

This message hit exactly the topic I was wondering about as my husband and I go on our first cruise. We'll be staying in a sky suite. I'd like to follow up on a couple of things.

First, just in general, the whole concept of a steward is so alien to me. How many cabins is the bloke assigned to, and how do I find him if I do need some sort of assistance?

Second, it surprised me that someone mentioned that if I would want to eat in my room in the evening, I would need to tell the butler that in the AM. I would picture that, a lot of the time, I wouldn't decide that until an hour or two before dinner. Is that not possible? (You know,: "Do you want to go out to eat, or do you just want to stay in and watch a movie?") Can I also get lunch in my room?

Finally, the mention about having a catered party in my room just blew my mind. I guess I can't count the six of us going on the cruise together as a 'party', but I could see it as being fund to have my folks and sibs in for some games and having some stuff. Since we're all Mercury cruise clients, I assume that I don't pay additional for this food, right? Just remember when it's time to tip?

Preferring to do my 'faux pas' here vs. on the ship!!
Thanks!

Cheryl

Yes, you can get dinner served in your cabin if you decide to an hour or so ahead, but keep in mind dinner is served in cabin only during the dining room hours. They will take an hour or so to bring it to your cabin, more if it is really busy. They do a great job of setting up a table for dinner. They bring it on a table with wheels covered with a white table cloth and the table has 4 sides that they fold up once it is in your cabin so there is plenty of room, just like a table for two in a dining room :thumb We love to sit by our balcony with the door open if the weather is not too humid and have a nice private dinner for two.

I've said this before ... I don't want a butler. Seems to me to be nothing but an intrusion on our privacy. If I want breakfast/lunch/dinner or anything in between our steward has always brought and set it up for us. Also I'm sure he couldn't pack for us. We want to do it ourselves.

This prompts a question ... has anyone taken a suite and declined the butler service? We've considered the suites but DON'T WANT A BUTLER!
