Agree that Embassy Suites is a gamble. However, after trying other hotels in the immediate area we went back to ES this past January and have reservations for our next FLL cruise this coming January. Nothing has improve for years. ES have good size rooms, but definitely need updating. I think that they are just riding the cruise money train with as much profit as possible. That said we have not had much better luck with other hotels on 17th Street (the main street to Port Everglades). If you are a member of any hotel award programs (Hilton Honors for example), I recommend that you book with them and also look at hotels with the best rates. Costs vary considerably in FLL with the winter season being the most costly, but you can find better pricing away from the Port. Hotels near the airport seem to be less costly for one example, and the farther away from the Ports (both sea and air) will be less expensive unless you book on the beach.
I recommend that you use one of the big hotel booking sites and expand the search area to a few miles from Port Everglades and see the pricing for the date(s) that you are looking for. Prices vary considerably so find the one that best meets your needs and budget and then go direct to the chosen hotel and book directly with them. Booking direct is usually no more expensive than booking through large hotel booking programs and may even be less. If using a major booking system watchout for the fine print, some require 100% payment the moment you hit the reserve button. Probably not a good idea if you are looking far in advance as I would also recommend.
Anyway, booking a hotel in FLL is a crapshoot so just look at various options and pick the hotel that works best for you.
