I would like to know if anyone knows of tour group that I can call to schedule off shore excursions outside of the cruise line. The cruise line is just too expensive for these 3 items.
I am looking for fly fishing and or bear watching in Ketchikan and dogsledding in Skagway. The month of the cruise is August of 2005.
thanks for any information you have!

Sorry, don't know about bear watching or fly fishing but we did the dogsleeding in Skagway with the ship. I think the price was about the same whether you went on your own or not, but you can try doing a search for Skagway tours or the city's website and they should have something. Or try "Skagway tourism" and you should get something there as well.

We did do salmon fishing in Ketchikan (again with the ship, or took our catch from the dock and brought it to our dining room table the next night beautifully prepared!) and again I think the prices were comparable whether going it alone or with the ship.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Good luck!

Skagway is a very small town. I think that all the dog sledding is booked through the ship.

I don't fish (especially for flys - yuck!) but you can ask the local tackle shops for information.

I believe Katchikan can only be reached by ship or plane. So again, all the wildlife tours might be booked up by the ships. No one is going to fly to Katchikan for wildlife watching when you could do better out of Anchorage.

We took a fantastic helicopter-land on glacier-dog sled ride from Skagway. I booked independantly through a company called Temsco. I did it all online. It was cheaper than through RCC, but not that much. We had a wonderful experience. Very expensive, but it was the highlight of our trip.

Also, bear watching in Ketchikan was fantastic. I tried to book independantly through ISLAND WINGS but they were sold out. I booked with RC excursion desk. It was fabulous. SO awesome to see the bears in there own habitat eating the running salmon. Expensive, but we will always remember it.
