This might be a foolish question, but is it safe to eat the food in the different ports in the southern carribbean or are you better to eat just on the ship? Thanks for your responce.

We usually eat on the ship. We have eaten ashore before but, wouldn't buy from street vendors.

It's funny. I am asked this same question by folks visiting Washington DC! So I tell my friends, avoid the truck vendors unless you are buying cans of soda or bagged snacks-and even then...proceed with caution. We've eaten at places throughout the Caribbean--even spots where the "locals" go without problems. That said, your tummy may react badly to some seasonings or even the water used to wash vegetables. So packing some immodium or good ol Al K is a good idea.

I think if you limit yourself to eating only on the ship, you're missing out on a BIG part of why we travel in the first place - to experience local customs and cuisine.
As Cruise Cutie suggested, bring along some Imodium in case something doesnt agree with you, but be adventurous!
We've been to a local market in Cuba, made our purchases of fresh meat (NOT for the faint of heart - refridgeration??? ya, right...) and veg, and had probably the best meal I've ever had at a buddy's house. No problems at all.
Toured San Juan with another group who insisted on Denny's. We took a pass and found a great local place where we had a great meal.
As has been suggested, make sure the food is completely cooked, you should be fine!
You didn't go all that way to eat at Denny's!
