formal night

I told my daughter-in-law I would ask this queston for her.
How formal is formal night? Would she be overdressed if she wore a gown? How many men wear tuxs?

I have always packed very simple, but elegant cocktail-like party dresses. I have a few "little black dresses" I like to bring, and I have never felt out of place wearing them. Some people go way out to get hair and make-up done, along with a very formal dress. I have also seen some people have utter disregard for the formal evening who show up in jeans and t-shirts (what irked me more is that they were allowed to stay in the dining room!). I think it is really up to her. If she doesn't go out and get dressed up very often, then it might be fun to go all out. As far as the men go, the past few cruises I've been on, I've seen a lot of men opting to wear nice suits, although you will spot a few in tuxes.

She would be overdressed in a gown. As far as how many men wear tuxes, it seems to vary by line, itinerary etc. Even though there will be some very underdressed, she will not be out of place in a formal gown on formal night. Plus she will have the added pleasure of knowing she is following the requested, suggested, encouraged dress code. By the way I plan to be in my tux on formal night.

we go for dressing up to the nines, wear a gown if you want, a cocktail dress does nicely too, my man always wears a tux for formal night.
the longer the cruise the dressier people seem to dress,it also sometimes depends on the cruise line, but you wold have a hard time over dressing, under dressing is more of a problem

Most people on Carnival go semi-formal. Men in suits and women in cocktail dresses or nice slacks and blouse combos. There are some gowns and tuxes but they are a minority.

I've sailed Carnival 4 times. On one formal night I wear a gown and on the other I wear a cocktail dress. Seems to be about half and half.

Thank-you everyone for the replies. I should have said, my FUTURE daughter-in-law. My son is getting married in three weeks and his bride is...well...being a bride. She'll be glad to know she is packing the correct clothes.

I am also packing for my cruise. I am taking two gowns and a cocktail dress. They say formal so I am dressing formal. You don't get to do it everyday so why not do it right.

I'm with Darlene....I just got back from the Triumph and the first formal night I wore a floor-length gown and the second I wore a strappy black cocktail dress. I enjoy dressing up! My boyfriend wore a suit and tie both nights.

I wore a floor length dressy formal both nights and enjoyed it. I didn't feel out of place and even saw quite a few men in tuxes. My hubby wore a dark suit each night.

We "Dress" for formal nights, me a tux and her a gown. We love the photos and we look our best. We're not trying to impress, just feel good about ourselves. We like to admire the folks who "clean up nicely" and always sit where we can watch the parade. With cruising becoming "choice" of dining, you see both ends of the spectrum, however we enjoy the formals and since we're paying for it, we "choose" to sparkle a little. We love cruising and these nights are only a small part of shipboard life. Enjoy what ever you do, its your vacation. Sail On!!!!

I plan to wear my prom dress I thought I'd never get to wear again on my cruise in November...it all depends on what you want. Some people get all decked out (I enjoy it!) while others don't get as dressed up. Really whatever you are comfortable in that looks nice!

I have a floor length gown that I will be wearing on Carnival Imagination next week. I sure hope I don't feel too out of place being all dressed up.
