Fort Lauderdale - Cab or Transfer?

Since I'll be on a flight arriving very early the day of departure, I'm considering getting a cab from the airport because I think transfers from the airport begin around noon (and so I don't have to wait for them to fill a bus). Does anyone know how far the airport is from the port? If it's going to be outrageously expensive I guess I could do the transfer. Also, is it possible to only get a one-way transfer -- in other words, just get a transfer back to the airport on the day I return? Thanks for your helpful resonses to my earlier questions too! :)

Having just come back from FLL, hubby and I decided that we wouldn't do a transfer again. The bus from the ship to the airport (we only did a one way transfer) cost us $10 (w/o tip) and it would have cost us $12 for the cab. We had to wait for the bus to fill up, etc. Next time, we're doing the cab.

Go for the cab! Why waste your precious vacation time sitting on a bus? We took the transfer the first time, and have used cabs ever since. Much quicker and easier. You can go when you want (we usually go between 11-11:30), rather than when the cruiseline arranges for you to go. Not sure about the airport pickup, but they don't usually go from the hotels until 1-2 PM. The price difference is not enough to worry about as DebraK said in her reply. I think you can purchase a transfer on the ship if you want to take the bus back to the airport. But again, it was much quicker to just hop in a cab. By the way, make sure you have your picture ID on you (not in the luggage in the trunk) when you go to the pier...you will be asked for it.

Hope you have an awesome time!!!

Yep, I agree, cab is the only way to go. No waiting around and you can get there early to be first on the ship and start relaxing. Only a few dollars more and no hassles of waiting around for others to arrive.
Have a great cruise.

Definitely go for the cab and avoid the bus, sitting there until they fill it up.

No question about it... Cab both ways, you can get on the ship earlier and you can beat the crowd back to the airport. FLL airport is less than 3 miles from Port Everglades.

Agree! Definitely easy to get a cab at either the airport or the pier.

How are the cab drivers in Fort Lauderdale? After the ride I had in Miami I never want to take a cab again. We came so close to getting hit by a tractor trailer!!! It was terrible. Then one week later that family coming home from a cruise was killed because of a cab drivers erratic driving.

We had no worries, the cabs we took didn't seem to drive that crazy. Of coarse if it is during rush hour, NO PROMISES. But really, we had a nice safe ride!

The only issue I've had with any cabbies in Fort Lauderdale is them not turning on the meter for shorter rides. If you agree in advance to a fare.... well, technically they still are supposed to. But if you haven't gotten a price, and they don't turn on the meter, insist they do.
