FREE cabin/suite upgrades

To any cruisers who usually sail in the off-season: Does celebrity usually upgrade passengers in cabins or suites when the ship is not full? For example, Celebrity's Mercury Mexico Riviera sailing this April (in less than TWO months) have about 7 Royal Suites available, and both Penthouse Suites are not booked yet. Do they just leave this suites empty the whole cruise, or are passengers almost automatically upgraded?

CELEBRITY does not upgrade very often...they sell the cabins on the day of departure or the next day at sea. If you want an upgrade..go to the Concierge desk or ask when you check in at the pier.

I've had one in 5 cruises upgraded - from balcony to SS on Century. Past 2 experiences have been upselling by concierge staff as soon as you board - took them up on it once.

In this market a lot of cruisers will pay an extra fare at the port thus making free upgrades ver y few and far between. On Celebrity I have never had one,,, on RCL I have one time but that was after years of cruising with them.

As first timers on Celebrity (just returned from the Summit), we were astounded to learn a few days prior to our sailing, that we had been upgraded from a Category 6 outside to a Category 2C outside with verandah. The ship seemed full to us and, of course, this is the height of the season in the Caribbean, so we have no idea why we were upgraded...and we didn't ask! Obviously, we were thrilled!

After 13 trips with HAL, this had never happened to us, and it is due to this superior treatment by Celebrity, along with other factors on this trip (superior service, food more to our liking) that we will be planning our future trips with Celebrity. Yeah, their marketing ploy worked and turned what simply would have been a wonderful cruise into an unforgettable one!

Good luck with the upgrades...they can happen!

I too have always wondered about the "upgrade" business. I talked with an RCCL rep and she said that the line uses upgrading as a way of filling the ship. As I understand it, the lower cabin categories are offered with a guaranteed one category upgrade up to a certain date. The most upgrade you will get is an inside to an inside or an outside to an outside. She said that passengers never cross categories -- that is inside to outside. But it's a murky issue. We sailed on Celebrity two years ago and were moved from an inside to a cabin with a porthole. It was nice having the window, but we went from midship to allllll the way to the front of the ship. That hike each night probably helped keep the weight off, but it was a loooooon hike.

When they sell these upgrades are they a deal? Like how much? Or just what you would have paid anyway?

2 years ago , we paid $3000 per cabin upgrade from Celebrity suite to Penthouse Suite(for 3 person}, this was a 7 days Millie cruise.
For the 11 days Summit cruise we paid $1000 per cabin to upgrade from Cat 2 balcony to Celebrity Suite.
