We've been to Nassau twice. This is what we did:
1. Went to Paradise Beach, a less populated beach that is gorgeous. If you walk up the coastline a little ways, it backs up to the Atlantis resort, which is very fun to walk through and look at. A cab to Paradise Beach is around $4 from the port.
2. Went to Cable Beach; cab fare being around $10, there's a bus that runs to and from for about $1 per person. We caught that on the way back, not knowing it even existed before. Our cab let us out at a Wyndham, I believe, and we just walked through the lobby to the beach. No fees.
Walked through the Straw Market - a collection of locals who are very interested in selling you their wares. If you are into this type of "interactive shopping", you can get some good deals.
A lot of people don't like Nassau. We always do the beach thing and we've managed to have an excellent time both times we've been.
I almost forgot to mention - in Freeport there's a beach called Lucaya (website ourlucaya.com). I've heard this is a really nice beach and in a resorty area. We were going to do that on our last cruise, but our itinerary changed from Freeport to Nassau.
