Galveston port

Are we there yet

We happened to be in Houston this weekend (10 - 11 - 08) and we drove on over to the Galveston area. It is sooooo bad - everything is brown and dead and wet and smelly still after just one month. What struck me most is that there is no living bushes, trees or grass. The wind, salt and sea water just killed all of them - no green anywhere. Those poor people don't have anything musch left - yet there are sections of town that seem none the worst for wear.

Has anyone heard whether the ships are going to be going in and out of there by late Oct. The pier appeared not too bad - but there was a ship for relief workers parked where the Conquest usually is and the parking lot was full of tents for the workers.

If you need a hotel - it didn't look too promising. They are either full with no waiting lists or not open yet.

Let me know what you're hearing.

Thanks Karen

I received an e-mail from my friends in Phoenix who's daughter and son in law lived on Galveston Island. Here's a part of that e-mail.

The latest on Heather and Eric:

Her paycheck ends soon, but she may be able to work in the lab soon - although she will need to commute a long distance for Rosemary's house in League City. It will be complicated as Eric will need to drive her back/forth to work.

They say that the Island looks like a War Zone. I can't imagine. You know the Island - what a shame.

They are getting some good $$ for housing allowance and Heather wants to get an apt soon. I think Eric wants to wait a bit.
Heather is looking for a job elsewhere meanwhile... There is a job in a town 60 miles outside of Austin.

Everything on the first floor of their house is a loss. But everything on the 2nd floor is okay - including the furniture of the 2 bedrooms and the small den is good - then they could conceivably just move into a small place without having to buy any furniture. Of course, some freaking idiot looted their house and took their large tv. They will need everything for a kitchen. I have sent them a list of things I have to give them for their kitchen. Mostly new or some slightly used stuff.

What a challenge but at least, they are AOK.
