Sailing in July 04 from Vancouver on the Sun. What is the weather like? Inland and on the ship. This is my 5th cruise but first to Alaska. What to pack for weather variances? Any input on the ship would be great! Food? We are going for my in-laws 30th anniversary and taking my 7 yr old who is a seasoned traveler. Any info on the kids programs? We leave on the 11th and would enjoy knowing if anyone else is booked. Thanks!

Louise, the kids program on the Sun gets great reviews although we have no kids (young ones that is) so I am speaking from reading reviews and talking to families on various cruises. The Sun is a great ship with cabins about what you find on most ships, a little bigger than RCL and a little smaller than Carnival; they are identical to the size of the cabins on Celebritys Constellation. Clothes, well the weather will be at it's best in July. We did Alaska about 5 years ago in late May, early June; about froze to death. Not really but July is a much better time. Off the ship the weather should be nice although you may need windbreakers and long pants. I have heard some say shorts can be worn some days. On the ship it will be a bit different, sunny or not, the weather will be cool. I sure you will hear from others that have sailed in July that can give you a better idea. By the way, be sure and try the tapa bar once and at least one alternative dining rooms. Just a suggestion. The only less than positive experience we had on the Sun was the buffets. Buffets are buffets as we all know, but we did thing the Sun's was below par. Everything else was outstanding.

Thanks for the info! We have been on Carninval, RCL and NCL but it has been a long time since we were on NCL. The cabin looks much like the balcony cabin we had on RCL to Europe in 2002. I am with you on the buffets, always iffy. We will try the tapas bar as my husband loves tapas-thanks for the suggestion. I am glad to hear that long pants and jackets would be needed as I have seen message board threads that indicate the weather can be cool and wet. Do you have any guidance on better times to eat in other than the main dining rooms? We eat early but from what I have read, the restaurants tend to fill early instead of later (as with some lines) in the evening.

Thanks, Louise

We were in Alaska in July a few years ago and the weather was great. But we seem to always lucky about nice weather on any cruise we take. I hope our luck holds up we are going back to Alaska this June on Ncl STAR.

We'll be on the same ship 1 week before. My inlaws, husband, and teens (18 and 13) will be joining me. This will be my inlaws 1st cruise (They are arriving from Dublin Ireland) and we leave on June 27 (my m-in-laws birthday). It is our first cruise with NCL, and we are looking forward to a casual fun time.

I'll try and post from the ship...

Cruise director Paul Baya was outstanding, the guy was everywhere. The shows were the best we have seeen on any NCL ship. Food, average, with the exception of the La Bistro (fee) which was 5 star. Don't miss the Tapas Bar (no fee) A nice mix of people, certainly not snooty!! Plenty of deck space. I would asume the kids' programs are wonderful since there were 575 on board when we were on Her in Dec. Hardly saw a child, and we were near the kid's center. In general, a very nice well paced cruise.
