Getting around in cozumel

My wife and I are doing our first cruise in October. We have a stop in Cozumel. We have one shore excursion, but we want to do since exploring afterwards.

How do we get to the other side of the island quickly and cheaply?

Lots of taxis in the area fairly cheap , wife loves shopping there , good restaurants and bars.

Rented cars there but quite a qhile ago now so I have no good info other than you can't get lost. Eventually you get back to the ships/
