I would definitely inform the cruise line - there are too many things that could go wrong if you didn't - mostly the danger of not getting back on where you want to.  If you inform them and they say "no", I'd heed that answer...you might jeopardize the balance of your trip if you don't follow their instructions.


It probably can be done, but not without the cooperation of the cruise line.  I'd be way too nervous on my excursion away from the ship wondering if I was going to be able to re-board.


I would definitely let the cruise line know your exact intentions - chances are they will help you execute your plan but I wouldn't  try to trick them.  As you said, the card scanners will show you all as A.W.O.L. and that could cause a lot of problems.  I wouldn't leave the responsibility of telling the front desk to your cabin steward, either.
