Ghost Tours in Key West?

We're on RCI's Rhapsody of the Seas next month, and it makes an afternoon/evening stop in Key West. Since the trolley tours, etc., shut down only 90 minutes after we arrive, we're looking at potentially taking a Ghost Tour through Old Town. Two businesses operate such tours, and I wanted to see if anyone has taken one specifically, and if so, how your experience was. (We've done Ghost Tours throughout the US and England, and have really enjoyed them. Sort of an off-beat way to see the city and learn some fun trivia.)

The two tours offered in Key West are:

- Key West Ghost Tours (alleged to be the original, conducted by the author of a local ghost story book)

- The Ghosts & Legends of Key West (the Key West branch of a business that conducts tours in Charleston, SC, Savannah and other cities)

Would love to hear any recommendations. Thanks, and safe travels!

Never have tried that but it sure sounds interesting. I did notice a camera crew once while I was having a drink at Captain Tonys in Key West and asked what they were filming, the answer....... ghosts. It was a little creepy after I heard that and we moved on to another bar.

I remember the Travel Channel featuring something on the Ghosts of Charleston tours last year, but I'm sure either would be awesome! I wanted to do one when in Charleston last summer, but I didn't have the time, as it was only 2 nights w/ family friends on the way to Florida...

We vacationed in Key West a few years ago. We did the Key West Ghost Tour , the one by the author and loved it. We live near Charleston SC and have done that Ghost tour but loved this one more. This is our personal op hope it helps you pick which one to do. Have a great time.

Thanks to all. We received a very pleasant and helpful email response from the folks at Key West Ghost Tours (the one SweetPea recommends). They suggested we take the 9 pm tour because the 7 pm tour will cause us to miss the fabled sunset at Mallory Square. That's the kind of helpful advice that, at least to me, suggests a group with its act together. (They also suggested we leave Mallory Square via Whitehead instead of Duval, thus avoiding the post-sunset throng of tourists.)

I'm intrigued, too, that this tour compares favorably to Charleston. We very much enjoyed our Charleston tour, though I know there are competitors in that town and we may have toured with different outfits. Still, I suspect that this one in Key West will stand out. Some tours, as we all know, are better than others, and it's always a pleasure when you stumble across the good ones.

Again, my thanks to all for your responses. This is always such a helpful group.

Safe travels!

Hi,

Does anybody ever actually see or take photos of any real or actual ghosts while on these tours or are they more for fun, history, and folklore?

It's really for fun. Just a different approach to a walking tour, and it's at night, which is always interesting. It's always amusing how many so-called local legends sound precisely the same from one town to the next. But it's a fun way to get your info -- there's usually a lot of local history and folk tales thrown in -- and we tend to enjoy them. But if you're on a really well-done tour.....they can get kinda creepy. My daughter and I took one in Savannah and we were pretty freaked out by the end of it. Some of the ghost stories were just downright ghastly. As I say, if you're on a good one, it can get spooky.

I'll let you know how the tour in Key West turns out. We'll be there week after next. And if you find yourself in either Savannah or Charleston, both cities have long histories and truly excellent tours. Not really cruise destinations, but both are exceptional places to visit. Take care.
