We have decided to forgo an excursion at this port, and do some walking, and find a beach since weve never been there, and have a full day planned for mexico the next day, can someone tell me the BEST beach to go to in Key West, if there are any fees, or cabs, we are going in May on the Enchantment

Key West is far from a "beach town", my personal opinion of the best beach is actually closest to the cruise piers, it is Fort Zachery Taylor State Park. Depending on what pier your ship is at you can actually walk to it, admission is the best bargin in Key West for something like $1.50.

Fort Zach - <http://www.floridastateparks.org/forttaylor/default.cfm>

Here are some of my pics from a recent trip to Key West, Fort Zack is in the middle of the pack:

Here is some additional information on the Key West beaches:

FORT ZACHARY TAYLOR
An 87 acre state park with a pre-Civil War Fort. Wonderful sunset views. One of the best beaches in Key West, though a bit rocky. Public restrooms, food/drink kiosk, chair rentals, picnic tables and BBQ's. Admission charged. Entrance through Truman Annex at Southard Street.

SOUTH BEACH
A favorite of locals. Nice sandy beach with shallow waters and a concrete pier. No restrooms or facilities. Located at the end of Duval Street on the Atlantic Ocean.

DOG BEACH
A canine favorite though rocky and slippery. No restrooms or facilities. Located next to Louie's Backyard (Vernon and Waddell)

HIGG'S BEACH
Wide sandy beach with long wooden pier. Restroom facilities, covered picnic tables, full service restaurant, playground, chair rentals, rafts and watersports rentals. End of Reynold's Street.

REST BEACH
Soft sand and natural vegetation. Home of the White Street Pier where you can enjoy some great fishing. Wheelchair accessible. Yoga deck with nightly classes. Restrooms within walking distance. Picnic tables. White Street on Atlantic Ocean.

SMATHERS BEACH
Half mile stretch of sandy man-made beach. Restrooms, ample parking, concession stands, chair rentals, bike paths, picnic tables, volleyball nets, watersports rentals - jet skiiing, parasailing, and windsurfing. South Roosevelt Boulevard.

Since above told you about beaches - here is another suggestion. Just get off the ship and perhaps ride the Conch Train. It is just about an hour (if I remember right), they point out the points of interest. And then get off and just walk. Neat little shops, good places to grab a bite to eat. Check out Mel Fisher's Museum. Lot of the gold he brought up from ship wrecks. Most places are within walking distance.
With Key West - its the ambiance, people watch, it's fun.

yes we actually have friends on the fascination the same sail date so that will be really nice... i have absolutley no interest in the conch train, or any historic tours... what else is there to do , shops and stuff we were going to do on the way back to the ship, but we have such a full day in xcaret the next day, that we kinda wanted to relax, here the other problem, though Sonia and I are from NJ our other cruing buddy is my girlfriend that lives in Tampa, so shes got gorgeous florida beaches all the time, what else for 3 ladies to do from 7-2 ?? we figured wed spend about 2 hours at the beach, and then something else

Quite good, there are two main spots off the Southern side of the island the tours will visit, "Eastern Dry Rocks" and "Western Sambo", most of the tours will hit both. They about 15-20 boat ride from Key West.

I have used Sebago in the past - http://www.keywestsebago.com/snorkeling.php

There is limited/no snorkeling from the show, it is best to take one of the tour companies.

Key West is not about beaches, but bars and shops. Take in the local culture. Many of the local museums are very interesting and the locals are fabulous.

I know that alot of people talk about the museums its just not my thing,,, thank you above poster who mentioned the two snorkeling spots, i think were just gonna book the snorkel tour with the ship, if we cant find anyhting else,,, they offer free RUM punch :)
