I have just discovered that the Golden Princess is going to be coming to Isla de Margarita now through September 2004 every other week from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. For those of you who are on this cruise, there is a free beach at the port in Margarita. The water is shallow and calm. There is a volleyball playing field. There are 98 local artesans right at the port selling souvenirs and various interesting items. You can get a massage right at the beach and a cool drink. The shopping is tax free. The exchange rate is 1900 bolivars to the dollar so you money goes far.
A lot of the venders speak english. Be sure and look up Jesus, the silversmith, Gustavo who hand paints t shirt with beautiful scenes. Kristina sells beautiful jewelry as fast as she can make it and has hand crocheted sarongs and bathing suits in bright colors and black. Angi paints and sells picture frames made from a local wood and locally made pottery. There are also unique hand painted checkers and tic tac toe sets with playing pieces made from local beach stones.
