Good thoughts for my hubby please

When he was 5 yrs old my husband stabbed himself in the eye with a knife, he was cutting string to make a parachute for GI Joe.................. he jokes that actually 'blinding' himself saved his life because he was going to go on the barn roof and jump off with GI Joe!

Anyway he went to the eye surgeon today who said his retina is in good condition and he has a huge 'block' of a cataract. He goes in next Wednesday to have it removed and a lens put in. The surgeon said he should gain back his eyesight and his only problem will be to get used to having two eyes!
He said he learned to work with one eye and he will now have to learn to live with two working eyes. He may have to drive with one eye shut until he gets used to his new vision
He said he obviously can't promise all this 100% but he is 99% sure. His only worry is trying to remove the nasty cataract.
So keep Phil in your thoughts next Wednesday the 22nd.
Thanks everyone. :thankyou:

On a sadder note I am taking Lizzie to the vets to day to see if she has lymphoma :(

Actually, this is great news! Yes, it's surgery, and there is always some degree of risk. But; what a wonderful result you both have to look forward to (literally). Prayers, of course, for an uneventful operation and a successful outcome! Please keep us informed. On Lizzie too. Cody sends her special "woofs!"

Barbara - being a recent cataract surgery (actually, surgeries - both eyes) veteran, I wish DH all the best. He'll be amazed at the difference!

Pucci sends special tail wags to Lizzie and we hope for the best there.

Ok well it looks like it is lymphoma, they found the enlarged glands when they cleaned her teeth a few months ago. :(
So we have taken her off the previcox and started her back on prednisone today and tramadol for her joint pain.
Usually they only have a prognosis of 3 months from diagnosis if the lymphoma is only treated with steroids. So she has done good so far in that respect. The vet said if it was a gland infection she would be sick now and she isn't really.
With lymphoma they do well then suddenly get ill :(
Her breathing is laboured sometimes and she is panting more than usual but she also has an enlarged heart so it is hard to tell if what is causing those symptoms.
She is eating and drinking well and doing her usual beagle barking when she thinks it is required
I was considering flying home to the UK at the beginning of November for 3 weeks but I will probably change those plans now to January.

Phil only has slight peripheral vision in that damaged eye and it is very poor at that. So even if he doesn't get his total vision back as the surgeon is hoping for at least his peripheral vision should be much improved.
The surgeon thinks the surgery will be very successful and so do we!

I can't imagine how excited you all must be at the prospect of your DH's sight returning in his bad eye. My father only had one eye, lost one in a black smithing accident when he was around 20. I grew up knowing how precious his sight was, all of our sight. Had my father had the chance to get his sight back in that one eye.......well I can't even begin to imagine the emotions we would of had. My father's loss never stopped him though. He was an amazing man, a true jack of all trades. He could build/fix anything. I will keep your DH in my prayers and ask my dad to send anything good he can from above.

So sorry for Lizzy though. I hope she continues to do her beagle barking for a long, long time!

Bit more news, even though it is the usual cataract surgery the cataract has developed on uneven scar tissue rather than a smooth lens so this may cause problems. The surgeon said he won't know exactly what's going on until he does the surgery, so Phil may have to have the procedure done more than once.
Hopefully not though!

Thanks for the good wishes.
I could say I am spoiling Lizzie but she has always been spoiled!

A little update.
Hubby has to go in for further tests on Tuesday and he is the last one for surgery on Wednesday as the Dr wants to have the time to spend on the procedure as it is not a 'normal' cataract removal. Hopefully he will be able to remove it all at once!

As for Lizzie the vet is sure it is lymphoma but without a biopsy she can't say 100% We don't want to put her through all that. She is eating and drinking as usual and she is wagging her tail as usual but she is quieter, her breathing is a little laboured at times and she is panting more than usual. She won't go out in the large fenced in area where the pool is anymore but she will go into the 70' dog run they have. I think somehow this is partly due to her grief over Morris.
Not sure if the breathing issues are due to her enlarged heart or problems with her lymphatic system :(

So she is on her heart meds and back on prednisone, off the Previcox for arthritis and now has tramadol for the joint pain.
They usually only have 3 months to live if treated with prednisone but she was diagnosed a few months ago so she has outlived the 'text books prognosis' so far.
The vet said they usually become very ill all at once with this and I feel this 'episode' is just starting :(

Sorry this was so long, I suppose I just needed to say all this. I am still reeling after losing Morris. :bawl:

I am trying to focus on the wonderful news about Phils eye surgery:sunny::sunny: :sunny:

:thankyou: for listening!

You really have a lot going on at one time.

Fantastic news about hubby's eye. I sincerely hope it is a quick and easy operation and the results make you dance with happiness.

Sorry about Lizzie. Our furbabies are family, and it hurts when they are not well. Love her dearly and enjoy spoiling her.

Barbara - how did DH's surgery go today? I believe he was scheduled for his procedure late this afternoon. I hope all went well.

Hubby had his surgery yesterday afternoon, it took over an hour and apparently it was a good teaching experience for everyone present.
Phil said the surgeon had them all come and look at the block of a BLACK cataract he had removed.
He couldn't suture his pupil 'together' and he didn't want to mess up the already complicated surgery. He will take another look at it after it all has settle down in a weeks time.
We went back this morning for a follow up and all is well, he goes back next week.
Yesterday when we got home which was 2 hours after surgery he could already see me with his 'bad' eye.
He could also see the kitchen cabinets at a 45 degree angle !
He could see the colours on the TV.
Today he saw the big E at the doctors office when they tested his eye, he could see the next size E slightly but couldn't make it out.
Before surgery he couldn't see ANYTHING!
Now how amazing is that!!!:sunny:
He is of course doing the usual eye drops routine as well as some extra care because he is special

Lizzie is doing ok and there doesn't seem any change in her well being at present so I am also very happy about that.
To add to all this Phil bought me some new earrings for HIS special day

Thanks again to everyone for your good wishes. :thankyou:
