Good thoughts for my sister, please

My sister is having her 5th surgery on her knees... none of the others took care of her problem, so she had a total knee replacement on Tuesday. She's in a lot of pain, and some of you are familiar with, and her problem is that she can not tolerate the pain meds that take care of the pain! She's tired of vomiting for hours on end, so she is on something she can tolerate but doesn't quite do the job.

I wanted to send her something in the hospital, and flowers just didn't seem right... so I sent her a basket of old time candies. Turns out that most of them were her favorites as she was growing up! SCORE!!! Big Hunks, Mikes and Ikes, Sugar Babies, salt water taffy, candy lipsticks, wax bottles of pop, you remember all those great candies from our childhood. She said the nurses are coming in a whole lot more to say HI, so she's hidden her favorites! LOL!

She doesn't want the kids coming to see her because she's afraid that they will freak seeing their mommy all messed up (to a 7 yr olds point of view) so she's missing them a whole lot.

But please send your FEEL BETTER's winging her way, she's in a lot of pain, and this time, refuses to leave the hospital until her pain is under control. (Last surgery, she was in the ER 4x in 3 days because of the pain. This time, she doesn't want to have to resort to that.)

Thanks.

Best wishes to your sister. As someone who can not tolerate pain medication, she has my sympathy. I found when I had my wrist/thumb joint removal surgery last June that 1/4 Percocet, followed by 200 mg. of ibuprofren one hour later alternated every hour kept the pain tolerable and I did not vomit. If I tried to take half a percocet, I would be sick. Hopefully she will find a balance that works for her and this surgery will be succcessful and give her the relief she needs. :angel Keep us posted please.....

Thanks Deb. I'll recommend that to her, see what she says.

I can't take any pain meds that contain Codeine or that family of drugs. We ARE sisters, for sure!

Hi Glo...

Just checking in to see how your sister did during the night. Sometimes it is difficult to sleep =sleep , due to accidental movement. Hope she is feeling better today. Please remind her to eat, that also helps with the nausea. Prayers continue....:angel

She's loving the food, it sounds like. Salads with goat cheese and pecans! So different than when I was in the hospital 20.5 years ago, for sure!

I just spoke to my sister. She said they have her on some meds that seem to be doing the trick, and that she might be able to go home on Saturday or Sunday. She's kinda ready. I think she should stay there longer, she will NOT get any rest at home, with three kids... two 7 yr olds, a 9 yr old, and a 42 yr old! LOL!

Hugs back at your sister and you! My dad had his knee replaced a few years ago, the first weeks are the worst, now he says its just like new.

I just love all the friendship and support this board gives each other!

Glo - I'm sorry I missed this note earlier. TKA's (total knee replacements) are NOT fun. While I was lucky to be able to tolerate most pain meds, some other meds during my second knee replacement did not agree with me, and they heaped misery on misery.

Will your sister go to a rehab facility once she's discharged from the hospital? Rehab is critically important post-op. And for rehab, she will indeed need pain management.

For my first knee replacement, I was hospitalized 3 nights then spent almost 2 weeks in a rehab facility. For my second knee replacement, I spent 9 nights in the hospital due to complications (not related to the knee replacement). I was too weak for a rehab facility and opted for in-home therapy at the home of a friend.

With my fractured right kneecap, I'm still doing everything possible to avoid further surgery.

Very best wishes to your sister.
