A couple of mine:
the "cafe" two doors down from the Mahajaul Hotel in Mahajaul (sp?) at the port of Costa Maya, Mexico. Most people from the cruise seemed to stick to the shopping area near the pier or else went on excursions. We rented bikes and road the 2+ miles down to this little fishing village and enjoyed the sights, sounds and a meal on the beach. ***Salsa Warning!!!*** the salsa there is fantastic but also might reduce you to tears if you put on a normal helping like you are used to in the USA. This stuff must have a dual use as paint remover or firestarter....lol.
a bit expensive, but hire a taxi to take you around part of the island of St. Kitts and ask the driver to take you to places he considers interesting but not the normal tourist places. You'll get a taste of the real St. Kitts along with some tasty eating if you have him pick a stop for a light meal as well.
What's some of your unusual and interesting experiences???
Wow, I almost forgot my favorite - the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary. It's located a few miles outside of Montego Bay, Jamaica up in the hills. It's basically a private residence where an old lady fed birds for over 40 years. Her assistant owns and runs it now and it is a very rural setting with nice garden and LOTS of birds! Not everyone can claim to have fed a hummingbird like the Doctor Bird (Jamaica's National Bird) while it sits on your finger but you'll be able to if you stop here. A birdwatcher's delight! $9 entrance fee plus your taxi ride.
