I will be on a cruise (RCCL Voyager) in June and we will be in Grand Cayman from 8:00 – 4:00. I love snorkeling and my wife and I have our own snorkeling gear.
I have read a lot of people rave about how they loved Captain Marvin’s or Captain Bryan’s for the Sting Ray City thing, but since we swam with Sting Rays in Belize last year, my wife doesn’t care if we see sting rays again this time. She really likes snorkeling and seeing marine life though. I hear that I can still get great snorkeling with Captain Marvin’s because his trips do not only go to Sting Ray City, but also go to the Coral Gardens and the Barrier reef, all for $39 per person for the 10 a.m. – 1 or 2 p.m.
Then again, I heard that I can walk right off the ship and turn right and walk 2-3 blocks to Eden’s Rock and snorkel right from shore there. Is this good snorkeling?
My wife and I have our own snorkeling gear, so we don’t need to worry about paying for a guide, unless it is worth it to get to some reef. I don’t mind paying a guide if we will see much better stuff.
I have read that a lot of people like 7-mile beach. It seems like I can expect to pay $15 for a taxi ride for 2 people or $4 per person if we take a van. I also hear that I can expect to rent chairs for $10 each at the Holiday Inn.
Is there any good snorkeling on 7-mile beach or is it mainly just nice sand? If the snorkeling is good, where? Is there a particular place that I should have the taxi driver/ van driver drop us off at (is there a cruise passenger friendly hotel or do they all expect you to pay to sit on their slice of the beach?) I hear that Colony Club is a rip-off and is a place to avoid.
Should we have the taxi driver wait or are there plenty of taxis coming and going so we won’t have to wait long to get back to the ship?
What is a good back-up plan (in case of bad weather)?
My wife likes shopping (especially jewelry), so we had planned on snorkeling in the morning and then shopping in the afternoon. Any tips or ideas? We will be going to Cozumel also, so should we do our jewelry purchases in Cozumel or does Grand Cayman have good prices?
I hear that after snorkeling in the morning I can join a van/taxi (group of 6) and they will take us to Hell, the rum factory, and the turtle farm and it should cost $15 per person. Is that right?
Keep in mind that I would prefer to do any excursions on my own as opposed to using a ship-based excursion, so if you can give me estimated taxi prices and other helpful info like that, it would be great!
