Well, I can not speak from personal experience as I have yet to book one.... but I plan to first chance I get. To my knowledge, the biggest advantage is a much larger balcony, but you dont pay more than you do for any other cabin in that category. Regarding the wind, here isnt any (I dont think) because although it can get pretty windy up on deck with that air rushing down the sides of the ship as you sail (depending, of course, on wind direction), you are protected from that wind back there. As for noise, actually there is probably less because there is less foot traffic with that location. Mid ship has a LOT of foot traffic, therefore I think you hear more hall noise. I have been over lounges before and never heard a peep, so I think this would be the biggest threat (being over a lounge) that you would get at the very back of the ship. Now, I have been on a grand class ship (the Grand) and I do remember an adult pool at the stern. If I were booking an aft cabin, I may choose not to be directly under that pool deck (not sure if the pool is directly over the aft cabins or not) only because I do hear a lot of people complaining about noise above when they are under a pool deck (mainly noise from crew dragging deck chairs around to rearrange them, Im betting they do this early in the morning). I dont know about others, but I love the sound of the wake, to me its kinda mesmerizing. So, I would thouroughly enjoy an aft cabin. I would have booked one for my next cruise, however, I am taking my grandma along and thought mid-ship would be better for her (less walking). Im interested to hear what others say..... I may be all out of whack with my thinking since I have not actually had one. Post this question over on the community board, you will get a lot of answers there. I've seen them talk about it quite a bit in the past. Good luck in your decision!

Nat, thank you so much for your helpful information. Forgive me please, but what exactly do you mean "love the sound of the wake"?

Reasons, I love the stern balconies: usually larger, more private, less noisy, less traffic and like the previous poster stated the sound of the wake - the trail and sound of the water the ship leaves behind as she steams ahead. When I book I always look for a stern or port stern corner balcony. Just got off one on the Grand in Feb and will have the same cabin on the Caribbean in July.

Redcrown answered it for me.... the "wake" is that wide stream of churning water that comes from behind a ship as it is cruising (engines running). The propellers mix water and air together, which bubbles and swirls... creating a waterfall-like sound as those bubbles rise to surface and pop. To me, the sound and sight of this is quite fascinating and calming... call me strange :grin

We've been there, done that on the Grand Princess and contrary to Natalia's opinion, not everyone likes them.

I will NEVER do another aft cabin on a Princess ship unless we're in a lake! Talk about noise!!!!! I have heard quieter construction zones. The creaking, moaning, groaning, smashing and banging all night long was the pits. These were all ship noises, not passenger noises or noise from the show lounges. The movement was much more noticeable too.

The suite itself was gorgeous and I have to say that Princess has the nicest suites we've had, but the location was really terrible. We've had aft cabins on other cruise lines' ships and never had the noise or movement we experienced on the Grand.

The more you cruise, the more you learn your likes and dislikes. For us, a mid-ship cabin is ideal. It's quieter, doesn't have as much motion and is close to the elevators and atrium activities.
