Redcrown answered it for me.... the "wake" is that wide stream of churning water that comes from behind a ship as it is cruising (engines running). The propellers mix water and air together, which bubbles and swirls... creating a waterfall-like sound as those bubbles rise to surface and pop. To me, the sound and sight of this is quite fascinating and calming... call me strange :grin
