We are beginning to consider our options for our yearly Christmas vacation . We note that Grandeur is sailing from New Orleans this year. Does anyone have experience with that ship? How is the city dong now? Any thoughts about cruisng from new Orleans over Christmas, are we too far north to really enjoy it until the ship gets further south?

Thanks,
Hal

I sailed on the Granduer out of New Orleans in April 2004. It was ok. I was on it during spring break so it would be a different experience. The Vision class ships are older but they are fine for a 7-day western carribean cruise. I just got done talking to my sister in Gulfport about how things are now down there. I asked about New Orleans.

Here's her comments -
I don't know about the port in New Orleans..But the areas that got flooded are abandoned and still standing as gutted structures. The French Quarter was spared and is open for tourism. Temperatures during December run in the 60's and 70's during the day but drop at night - sometimes down in the 30's but rarely. There are so many ports that were damaged.. I think they are still rebuilding some of them but I am unsure which ones.

Hope this helps

The Grandeur is a great little ship (it's all relative these days). New Orleans port is in full operation. We have friends that have gone down - and enjoyed it immensely. I think my choice would be to go for the cruise and not spend a lot of time in the area until things are a bit more cleaned up. They've made immense progress, but have a ways to go.

Hi! I would not choose this sailing if I were you. Sailed on it from N.O. early March last year (pre-hurricane), and the last two days at sea were very chilly - very disappointing. A staff member told us it is often chilly and very windy like that for those last two days, so I can imagine that in December it would not be good. The ship was in beautiful condition, but really small after being on Voyager and Radiance class ships. My kids were not with me, but would have been very disappointed if they had been.

I am so happy for folks like you. You make sailing on Vision Class ships a real value and allow me to do what I like, enjoy the ocean on fine ships with little glitz and a lot of substance.

We have done two NO Christmas sailing on the Grandeur and each one cost us < $700 per person, OVER CHRISTMAS. :D

One was a "run of the ship" which turned out to be an ocean view on deck four and the other one was a booked Class K, in room 8049. This is the area/room we normally book in a vision class ship because the rooms are different than other "inside" cabins.

We want to be on ships. Considering we can do three cruises for the cost of a Jr Suite, and considering we are not rolling in extraneous cash, we will forgo the glitz and cruise more. This works really well for back to backs. When a diamond C and A member and when doing back to backs, upgrades for leg two are probable.

Hi,

We are sailing on the Grandeur in three weeks (February.)

We just booked this cruise @ a rate of $835 for a Junior Suite, plus a $50 shipboard credit! (tu)

Are there any recent Grandeur cruisers out of NO? I sure hope the sea days are not too cool. (td)

Hello ShipMate

I cruised out of New Orleans back in December. It was on the Golden Princess. The weather at that time was a little cooler than normal in New Orleans (low 70's). It warmed up quickly once we were out of river area (this takes a while) and out to sea. Expect temps in the low 80's as that's about the average.

New Orleans is was great. What's nice is they have really changed things at the Julia Street Terminal since I was there a few years back. They have a convienant covered garage if you are planning on driving in.

New Orleans is famous for their Hospitality and I can attest that its there in full force. We booked a room using Priceline. 4* French Quarter $58 and ended up at the Marriott on Canal. It was a wonderful place. I'm sure you will have a fabulous time. Are you going during Mardi Gras?

The grandeur is a nice ship. Unlike the bigger ships it doesnt take you a bundle of time to find out where you are going and worring if you are going to get lost. Take it from me ive been on her twice in two years.
