Our celebrity cruise ship will be stopping in Grenada, I've heard a few conflicting reports about touring there, has anyone toured there without one of the short excursions, and how safe did you feel doing this on your own?
I don't want to take a vacation, and have it not end up being anything but a great time!

We did the beach in Grenada. Water taxi right from the cruise dock. Wonderful time. Walked around the bay later. Just a great spot. Friendly folks and all the other wonderful things that make the islands great.

Grenada is a beautiful island, definitely one to explore. While the vendors at the pier and in the spice market can be quite aggressive in trying to sell their goods, a polite "No thanks" while continuing to walk will always work! That said, you should plan to bring back some of the little spice baskets as gifts for friends and for yourself - they are marvelous!
Hiring a driver at the pier is no problem - all are quite friendly and knowlegeable about their island. and many of them will express their continuing gratitude to the U.S. for their military intervention many years ago. As there's so much to see there, you might want to determine your priorities ahead of time so that you can plan accordingly with your guide.
Have fun!
