Holland America Line's Newly Redesigned Mariner Magazine Receives Top Industry Honors
Mariner Magazine Wins Magnum Opus and Apex Award for Innovative Design, Excellence in Content Marketing Efforts
Seattle, July 21, 2010 — Holland America Line’s Mariner magazine for alumni guests has received the 2010 Grand Magnum Opus Award, recognizing the best in custom publications and honoring the world’s top content marketing efforts in print, video and Web-based mediums.
This year’s Magnum Opus Awards were sponsored by ContentWise — the leading interactive publication source of content marketing information— and the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism. More than 200 categories were reviewed, ranging from best Web-based electronic publications to best integration of social media. Awards are based on criteria specific to each category and judged by professors from the university and leading content-marketing professionals.
In addition to its Grand Magnum Opus Award, Mariner also received Apex’s 2010 Award for Publication Excellence in the “Custom-Published Magazines and Journals†category. The Apex Award recognizes the best of the best in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications excellence. The 2010 competition drew more than 3,700 entrants in 11 major categories and 127 sub-categories.
“Since its inception in January 2010, Holland America Line’s redesigned Mariner magazine has provided innovative, quality content for our loyal Mariner Society members,†said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs. “Being recognized as having the best externally distributed magazine in the nation validates our efforts to deliver entertaining feature stories, superb photography and an imaginative design that showcase the ultimate premium cruising experience for our guests.â€
Holland America Line revamped Mariner with a sleek contemporary design, sophisticated layout, glossy cover and editorial content by professional travel writers and celebrity authors.
Additionally, each four-color issue contains featured sections including “Onboard,†which highlights what’s new on Holland America Line ships; “Ports of Call,†which profiles select ports and shore excursions; “Mariner Values,†detailing special cruise opportunities for past guests, and “Now Voyager,†a short destination article written by a travel journalist.
Mariner magazine also won numerous 2010 Magnum Opus Awards in subcategories including the Gold Award for best feature article, “Writing the Book on Venice,†featuring a series of reflections on Venice by well known authors such as Erica Jong, Anne Rice, and John Berendt.
Holland America Line’s Mariner magazine is just one of several new benefits in the Mariner Society Rewards Program the company launched in fall 2009. The program provides past guests with exciting rewards that range from generous onboard discounts while sailing and special rates on select cruises to reduced or free third and fourth rates when booking future cruises. All guests who sail with Holland America Line automatically are welcomed into the Mariner Society.
