Handling your own baggage at disembarkation?

I understand Carnival has a new policy where you can handle your own baggage at disembarkation and get of the ship much faster. Has anyone tried it?If so How did you like it? I would be interested in hearing more about it. Thank you in advance. Viet
P.s. We are sailing on the Legend.

We've used this twice and will be doing it on our upcoming cruise. We love it, we are able to get off the ship early and don't have to worry about putting our luggage out the night before.

My wife and I used it last year on the Triumph. We got off the ship by 8:30, but there was one MAJOR headache. Probably 2/3 of the passangers did the same thing and there were so many people carrying so many bags there was gridlock. At one time we were stuck in the hallway for 30 minutes and nobody moved an inch. We'll do it again this year, only this time we'll wait till the rush is over. It was nice not to have to look for your bags in the terminal.

My DW and I along with my DB and his DW used self-debarkation once. We all agree we will NOT do it again. Yes we got off the ship faster. And yes many others did as well but you can’t use the elevators so all of us stood on the stairs with ALL of our luggage until we were allowed to depart. Personally I think the worst part was dragging our luggage down all the flights of stairs. The luggage was thumping on every step. Because it was too heavy to carry. And if you have multiple luggage such as a large suitcase and a garment bag and maybe a carry on you have to handle it all. I enjoy a cruise way too much to have a total disaster carrying my own luggage off and being shoved and pushed on the last day.

Just how I feel.

Geesh...I've only been on one cruise so I can't always help alot of folks who come here with inquiries. However, I can answer your question because my one and only cruise was on the Legend and I took my own luggage off the ship.

I took the Cruise to Nowhere out of NY last October. We had such a relaxing morning when we returned. We ate our breakfast, called our husbands (who were picking us up), went back to our cabin and got our luggage. Off the ship we went, no fuss, no muss.

When I take my next cruise on Carnival, I will most definately disembark in the same manner.

Ciao,

My wife and I just returned on Elation on 3/2/06 and used it upon disembarkation. Ship was cleared at 7:02am and we were in our vehicle at 7:38 am. BTW we were parked at the lighthouse parking lot in Galveston just behind lot b. I think I will use this lot again. Cost was 45 dollars and shuttle took luggage. Like I said it was directly behind lot b on the terminal end of the parking lot.

We got off the Elation Feb 2. Another couple traveled with us. They did the self-assist, and we did not. In fact, we hung around for as long as we could, ate breakfast, wandered around the ship, looked through other categories of cabins.... pretty much took all the time we wanted. We finally got off when there was NO line (very few people were left on the ship), walked straight to our bags (most were taken already), and zipped straight through Customs, etc. (only 4 people ahead of us there). We were on the highway home about 20 minutes after we decided to begin walking out (had parked in Lot B... I took the shuttle while DW waited by the drop-off). I then called our friends, and we found out that they were only about 30 minutes ahead of us on the road.

If you must get off as soon as possible, then go for it. But I want to linger as much as possible!!!

Just remember that when doing self-debaration, you must be able to carry every piece of your own luggage - you will have no assistance whatsoever.

I take my time, have a leisurely breakfast in the dining room, go back to my cabin to freshen up and get my carry-on bag, then linger over a last cup of coffee - looking down from the Lido Deck at the throngs of folks doing self-debarkation. What a mess! No thanks - I don't want to be so stressed that I can't drive home after a nice relaxing cruise.

I can understand people who have to catch a plane, but for those driving, I just can't see it.....?

Also - when I get to the luggage area, mine is very easy to spot - not many left. Ahhhh, the leisurely last morning.

I haven't decided which way to go yet.I will say that the poll run's about 2/3 in favor.I may try it this time to see what it is like and if it does not work out I won't do it again, we'll see what happen's. Thanks again for all the input. Viet

It depends on how much you pack. Wife and I did self debarkation after only a 4 day and I will never do it again. You end up doing a lot of standing and cussing under your breath. Going on a 7 day in May and already told DW we are not doing that again. Life is to short to get stressed on the last day of your vacation. Hope this helps. Have a great cruise.

We always hang out as long as we can, and just walk off after the rush. Why get stressed out!! If you're flying, don't book any outgoing flights that leave before noon/ 1pm. Enjoy!! :cheers

what is the time frame that you must be out of your cabin ? Is it different if you handle your own luggage. And how long does it usually take for the crowd to clear? We will be taking our first cruise on the Fantasy out of Port Canaveral in June.
thanks.
