Has anyone booked their own air to Tahiti?

I have a ton of frequent flier miles and was thinking about trying to fly to Tahiti on our own. We could then use the $ we saved and upgrade our cabin to a suite. We are thinking about the 10 day Cook Island itinerary, and spending a couple of extra days pre and post cruise. Any suggestions?

I haven't been yet - it's on "the list", but when I was researching it, it cost much less to book it through the cruiseline! I was surprised, but Princess was charging $1200/pp from Boston and it was upwards of $3000 through Travelocity and Expedia. Booking on your own has it's advantages, such as choosing the times of your flights. But if you are doing pre and post cruise, you should have sufficient time to adjust to the time change.

I hope you have an awesome time!

The only trick may be finding an airline that flies there where you can use your miles... There are not too many that do, and I don't think any of the US majors go there other than through their partners like Air France or Qantas.

If you can do it, it's definitely worthwhile... just be sure to leave lots of buffer time, 2 or 3 days, particularly on the front end, and even more so if you're flying from a snowy place in the winter. If you get stuck somewhere or miss a connection, you may have to wait a day or two to get out there.

Good Luck and Enjoy!!

I just called AA to use miles on Air Tahiti Nui for our cruise to Tahiti in MARCH of 2004.....none available! Yep, 8 months ahead and mileage seats are already sold out. I always book my own air but not this time...I'm going with Princess. Only two carriers offer non-stop from L.A. (Air Tahiti Nui and Air France) Princess is less than all. The price is also good for their pre and post cruise hotel add-ons...I checked.

P.S. Allow lots of extra time for a plane change at LAX !!!
