We are going to Alaska in September and wondered if anyone has done the Dog Sled Excursion in Skagway and if so, what your opinion was?

We have been twice before and done the Whitepass Railway, the town tour and the gold panning - and have charted a boat for a 2-hour wildlife venture in the morning but thought we'd try something else new in the afternoon. This isn't the one up at Carlock, or on a glacier, but the one that is close to the port.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My dh and I went last year in May. It was a nice drive to the camp. It wasn't exactly what we expected. There was no snow and the dogs aren't huskies, They're mutts. The sleds were on wheels and they drive you for awhile and then give a small presentation from someone who has experience dog sledding. They had lots of puppies so we had fun playing with them and the dogs themselves were very nice. The people who worked there were nice. If you know what to expect you can make a good decision. I wish we had gone one the train, but since you've already done that, you might be interested. It was a nice way to spend the day and we had time to visit the town afterwards.

Thanks for the infomation. I did something similar in Sun Valley one summer and enjoyed it there - thought the others would like to have the experience, even if it is "modified" to some degree. And playing with puppies is always fun.

Thanks again for giving your input.

I did that trip many years ago. It was a very pleasurable way to spend the afternoon. One of the drivers was one of the women who was in the Iditarod who had written a book. I purchased a copy of it for her to autograph to my 6th grade class, and it was a great jumping off point for some Alaskan studies. There also were some craftspeople at the "village" type spot you are at, and I found watching them do their craft interesting as well.

Enjoy your trip!!
