I was just wondering if anyone has gone to Alaska in May and if so what was the weather like? We live in Florida and I am not sure if it will be cold and if so how cold? And how was the scenery in May any whales?
And do you think we should bring our digital camera and our camcorder?

Yes I have been to Alaska in May quite a few times. While there in May I have been in temps in the 50's to temps in the low 70's all in the same day. That is why they say dress in layers. May is considered one of the dryer months, however Ketchikan is a rain forest and you may see rain there regardless of when you cruise.

In May some of the most beautiful scenery is the thousands of waterfalls that you will see due to the snowmelt in the mountains.

Are there whales? Yes there are whales, however it is not the peak of whale season. If you know what to look for you can see humpbacks and Orca's as well as many other types of sea life. If you really want to see whales book with Captain Larry in Juneau to increase your chances of seeing whales.

Absolutely bring your camera and camcorder and bring a big memory card and a lot of video tape because you will take many more pictures than you normally would.

yes May can be the best month because of less fog. Weather is always iffy regardless of the month so its always a gamble. If you are in Florida you will feel the oposite of us going south. Its always warm there isn't it?? :)

Yes we have been a few times in May and we just pack layers of clothes as suggested. :)
We do have rain macs that we pack and we have used them once only, that was in Ketchikan and it was POURING it down, we still had a great day :grin
Last year hubby was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and I had jeans and a t-shirt on as we viewed the glacier! I usually wear a thick coat, hat, gloves and a scarf . :lol
Have a great cruise! :)

We cruised to Alaska last May and we are going again this May. The weather was nice last year, we had no rain and lots of bright sunny days. Even wore shorts during the inland passsage portion of our cruise. The temps. ranged from mid 50's to low 70's. As the others said, just wear layers and you'll be fine. We saw plenty of whales and wildlife. The bears are just coming out of hibernation and we were lucky enough to spot a brown bear (grizzly) on one of our shore excusions. The flowers probably aren't as plentiful as they would be later in June or July, but Alaska was still absolutely beautiful!

If your on a ship that goes to hubbard glacier don't expect to get close to it. That early in the season you won't get any closer than 3 miles or more. Not until much later in the season will you get up next to it.

We went at the end of July and were only able to get within 7 miles of Hubbard Glacier.

How close can you get to Glacier National Park glaciers in late May early June? 3 miles and 7 miles for Hubbard Glacier doesn't seem too close? Is the view good from that distance?
