I would like to "go it alone" and rent a car on St. John for the day. Does anyone have suggestions of best places to use, types of cars, watch out for, etc. ? Thanks.

Only saw jeeps for rent. We didn't rent one though.....too much thinking needed to stay on the left side of the road! It's a tiny island and the taxi guys love to do personal tours so for the same amount of money as renting you could use one of them.

There are several rental places just off the ferry dock in Cruz Bay, and all of them are similar... in both price and service. You'll read about personal preferences or problems one individual will have, but in the end there really doesn't seem to be much difference between them. Most offer Jeep Wranglers and Liberties, Suzuki Samaris and Vitaras, maybe a few other makes of 4-wheel-drives, and even some of the safari-type trucks (pick-ups with benches and a canopy in the back) if you have a large group. Jeeps and Samaris start around $50-$65/day.

As for driving on the left, its not really a big deal, and you get the hang of it quickly. There is very little traffic anywhere outside of Cruz Bay, and the scenery is spectacular! A beautiful view at the crest of almost every hill! You can drive the entire island in a fairly short period of time, and see many of the beaches in the South and East End that the taxis don't like to go to. Rent a jeep and do St. John on your own! Its a lot of fun!

I am sold. Is it OK to park it for a while to go wading - on areas off the beaten path.?

All of the more frequented beaches have parking a short walk from the beach. Some like Hawksnest and Maho have parking areas that are just steps from the beach. Parking at Trunk, Caneel, Francis and Cinnamon is just a couple hundred yards at most. You have to walk a little from the parking areas to get to Salt Pond or Waterlemon, but they're worth the effort! These (and others!) are all great beaches and you can see a lot of them, and choose your favorite, doing it on your own. Have a great time!
