Having 2nd Thoughts

First I must say I have never been to Alaska and don't know what awaits. Somehow I have this pre-conceived idea that Alaska offers about the same as I have in my backyard less the water and ice. I live at the foothills of the Smokey Mtns and less than an hour to get on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Its a beautiful part of the world. We leave Tue and taking the S.Bound from Whittier to Vancouver. Its either go or divorce. I love my wife so I'm going. Vancouver airport also has the stress level at the max. We have a 12:15 flight out. Its on a Wed, so Im hoping we're the only ship in Canada Place Wed morning. Anyone else had 2nd thoughts before their 1st Alaska cruise? This is our 4th cruise. All others have been in the Caribbean. I think that's another reason for anxiety. When I think of cruising I tihnk of hot weather. Thanks for the ear and/or all responses.

Absolutely NOT....This will be my 2nd trip to Alaska. We leave in less than 3 weeks and it's not soon enough. Yes Vancouver airport can be difficult. You don't say what day your return is scheduled for your flight home. Don't forget that when you have many ships in port (Sat/Sun) you will always have a backlog. We went through FLL last October on a Saturday and were one of 9 other ships in port....That was a ZOO...

I would like to hear your comments when you get back because I'm sure you will say Oh My Gosh...I didn't know. That's what I said the first time I went. The scenery is unbelieveable and pristine.

I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.

Enjoy your adventure which is exactly what you will do. Hey, it's a vacation after all and at no point on this trip will you ever imagine that you are in your backyard. Please let us all know how it went when you get back. What if Christopher Columbus thought that way? Would Mrs. Columbus have discovered the New World alone? Furthermore, I think Denali is a bit more than a foothill, you be the judge. No worries mate!

Vancouver's aiport is 0ne of the best in the world. (so surveys say) I know from my own experience that the others that I have been through enroute to cruising are not nearly as nice. The hold up is customs and it just a grin a bear it situation. There are at least two ships in every Wednesday and sometime three. But usually one is smaller if there are three. Go for the divorce and tell your spouse you know lots of others that will/can take your place.

I do believe you will not find that Alaska looks anything like where you live. You may have mountains but seeing them from the sea and seeing the glaciers will definately look different. I am also willing to bet that you do not have any whales going through the foothills of the Smokey Mountains. The weather can be unpredictable in Alaska but the beauty of Alaska will help you forget about the weather some. I do hope you are as lucky as we were in May with our weather up there.

As far as the airport in Vancouver it is a good size and can have some lines especially at security and at the customs counter even with only one ship in town.

Have a great trip and enjoy Alaska.

I live in NC not far from the mountains and I just got back from Alaska and let me tell you, the scenery is nothing the same. I love the NC mountains but the ones in Alaska are totally different. I guess you are already on the cruise but I will take your spot is you don't want to go.
