Hawaii Car Rental Questions

I am going on the Pride of Aloha later this month. I posted several months ago for suggestions of what to do on the Islands. Several people suggested renting a car and going on my own (as opposed to the excursions). I am interested in some feedback from anyone who rented on the islands. Here are the questions:

Where did you reserve the car - from the closest airport or at the cruise port?

What do you do with the car on overnight stays (someone esle asked this recently with no response)?

Are there any ports where you would recommend against renting a car. I would think it would be good on the overnight stops, but what about Kona and Hilo?

How much time should I allow for renting and returning?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I have been to Hawaii twice (Honolulu & Kona). Neither by ship (I flew in).

Parking in Honolulu is expensive. Check out Hawaii.Com and see about "The Bus." It really depends on where you want to go. You can go completely around the island and make several stops in one day. I would suggest renting at the location closest to the ship.

No problems with parking in Kona. If you are going to the volcano, go from Hilo (much closer). Do not speed (the police are sneaky, they drive their personal cars). The best beachs on the big island are north of Kona. The best black sand beach is near the volcano. The volcano requires some cross-country hiking. Bring good hiking shoes, a hat and plenty of water.

I can not offer you much help regarding the other islands.
