A gal friend of mine intends to buy a laptop. She is totally computer illiterate. She thinks because I play on the computer alot, that I must know something about these things, so has asked me for advice. :lol Oh my goodness ! Talk about the blind leading the blind !

I know nothing, but I did promised I'd ask some knowledgeable people to give her some advice. And since this board has the most computer savy people I know, that's where you come in.

What brand do you suggest?
Are their different levels of features that she will need to decide on? And what should she pick?

Any and all advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Our son has a Dell. He told Dell he will never buy another one - problems galore since he bought it a couple years ago.

We bought a Gateway last Christmas - so far so good. :)

I have a gateway laptop and a desktop. Very happy with it. We went to Best Buy and asked for the most knowledgeable person in the dept. He asked us alot of questions and then pointed us towards 2 laptops. I do alot of pictures so I got one with a lot of ram. I love mine.

We have Dell laptops and regular PC. Even use Dell at work. That would be my suggestion.

Laptops have come down in price so there isn't a real advantage to purchase one mail order. I would recommend buying local at a store such as Compusa and purchase a replacement warranty. This is a good option for those not familar with what they are buying because it's a no-hassle approach to service when needed. No packing something up and shipping a troubled computer to who knows where.

I love my Toshiba with the dual core processor. In fact, I never use my other computer anymore.

Sold my Dell because I could not understand "Bob" in technical support who works in India. Purchased a Gateway, very happy with it, and technical support is here in the USA!

My neighbor across the street from me had a Gateway desktop that was broken more often than working. One night my phone rings and it's him, he says look out your front window for a minute. As I get to the window and wave to him the next thing I see is his Gateway tower, keyboard & mouse come flying out of his 2nd floor window and smash to the ground. He calls me back and says, "fixed my Gateway, do you want to go computer shopping with me"? Funny/crazy guy! He bought a HP and loves it.

The only warning I can give you regarding Dell is do not expect much by way of customer service. If you ever do encounter a problem you are transferred straight to India where of course nothing gets done.
