HELP! Traveling with child that isn't potty trained!

Okay, so after booking our first family cruise, I come to find out that children that are NOT potty trained are not allowed into any of the pools with any type of training pants due to some kind of law. I have two children, one of which is an almost 3 year old boy that isn't potty trained...so what am I supposed to do with him while his sister is in the pool? Tell him, "sorry honey, your not allowed in the pool." Are they kidding me? I never heard of such a thing! I've been on many vacations with my kids and I've never been told that kids weren't allowed in the pools with training pants! I've already tried training him about a month ago and he's just not ready...and I don't know that he will be ready by May, that's when we leave for our trip! I never even thought to look into this because this has never been an issue for us before!

I never would have booked a cruise had a known this prior....anyone else come across this problem? I will start training my son again, but I can't MAKE him be trained by May! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry but they have these rules due to health and sanitation issues. There are some ships, not sure if Carnival is one of them, that have a separate private pool for babies to go into even if they aren't potty trained. But again these are separate from the main pools where his sister would go.

Re: HELP! Traveling with child that isn't potty trained!

Hi, We had to train our daughter for her first cruise. We bought a special training potty chair for her and it played a song when she tinkled in it. We also explained to her that she would need to get potty trained for the cruise as a goal. She did very well and was able to use the upcoming cruise as motivation. :) We too were kinda shocked that kids need to be potty trained not only to use ALL the pools but, also to attend the kids programs onboard. So it can REALLY motivate you to get the baby potty trained and focus on getting it done quickly. They take this pretty serious so Yes, it will be an issue for you if the baby is not potty trained.. like it or not. So I would buy whatever tools you can use.

I have heard allot of ways to potty train a baby but, it all comes down to what works best for your child.

Best of luck, I hope others can offer some more advice on ways to get it done.

They are not kidding you. "Swim Diapers" are not permitted in the pools. This is for the health of everyone onboard. All you can really do is try the potty training again using a lot of patience and a lot of praise. Good Luck!

I can't offer any advice other than what was said above, however, what John said sounds like a great plan! Making the cruise an opportunity for a big reward would be very cool!

If your child isn't 'trained' by the time of the cruise, don't make a big deal of it. Instead, try to make the activities involve other things besides the pool for all kids....that way one won't feel slighted. It may take some creativity, but rest assured, you aren't the first parent to encounter such a task while on a cruise. The great thing about the kids programs on all cruises is that they realize this situation may occur and/or some kids don't like the pool so they have to have alternate plans. I would make sure to make friends with all of the counselors in your kids' programs and talk to them about your expectations and your kids' limitations. They will be very accomodating, I'm sure.

Whatever the case, have a great time and let us know what the outcome was!

I've been on a cruise where due to ...well let's call it a "floater", they had to completely drain the pool, rope it off, then sanitize it. This kept everyone out of there for many hours. So I must say that I agree with the rule even if it sadly affects some of you with infants. To tell you the truth it's some of us "older" ones approaching diaper time again that worries me. :X:eek::)D:?

I sympathize with your situation. Unfortunately, as others noted, it's a health issue. My son was harder to train than my daughters. If your child isn't quite 3, you are right - it's going to be hard for them to ready by May. Something that I have seen on cruises occasionally is where families pack blowup pools for the little ones not trained. Place it near the ship pool and ask a staff member to help fill it up. This way you can watch the little one and the older kids at the same time. Just a suggestion.

If so, there is one pool that does allow non-potty trained children. I'll post a picture of it if you are on one of these three ships.

I agree with all the posters--use this as an incentive. My oldest only needed the incentive of getting a sandbox, the next one, to be able to go to pre-school. Once it's fixed in their minds, you'd be surprised how fast they can come around. If you are fortunate enough to be on one of the ships with a "baby pool," you'll be in like Flynn! Radiance class ships have a separate pool with water slide, too.

Re: HELP! Traveling with child that isn't potty trained!

Hello All:

I do realize it can be a health issue, but since all of our other vacations always allowed kids in the pools with their pull-ups, it never even ocurred to me that it would be an issue. Well, like most of you have said, I will use this trip as an incentive to get him trained and pray it works. We are officially starting tomorrow, wish me LUCK!

To the poster who asked if we were traveling on the Freedom, Liberty or Independence ships....no, we will be sailing on the Miracle...so I guess no kiddie pool there? Oh well, its just as well, he's going to want to be with his big sister in the big pool...I'll use that as some incentive, along with his Thomas the Train underwear (he LOVES Thomas) and the singing potty! He will love that!

Thanks to all that posted...I really appreciate all your helpful advice!

The Carnival Miracle does have a small kiddie like pool near the slide. I'm not sure what the policy is.. but, its small and appears to be a kiddie pool to me. I've been on the Miracle twice. :)
