help with Costa Maya

To anyone who has sailed the Western Carribbean on Princess - what does one do in Costa Maya? What's a nice beach to go to? I can't seem to find much about this at all. Is it far from Cancun? Is it worth just traveling to Cancun for the day?

Thanks, Sue

Sue,

Cancun is definitely not accessible from here. It's about a 4 hour drive one way. There are a number of Mayan Ruins which can be toured from this port, good snorkeling, the Uvero Beach Break is a popular excursion, as is just hanging out at the pool at the port or the beach nearby (bring water shoes, though, as it's a rocky shore). If you want to strike out on your own, take a bike or taxi to nearby Majahual (a small fishing village). There you can rent a chair on the beach and have lunch and drinks. It's not developed, but the people are very friendly and give a terrific experience.

Thanks,
a trip into the town sounds like a good idea - I always enjoy getting a taste of local flavor when I travel! Probably spend a good part of the day on the ship.

Thanks again, Sue - enjoy your upcoming trip!

There isn't much to do in Costa Maya, it's still a newer port. When your ship docks you can walk down the pier & go into the little shopping center. They have people singing int here & of course all the crafts & some jewelry shops. They have a restaurant under the hut with awesome food & great pina colada's in pineapples. There's also a small area where the locals put on some shows with colorful costumes, I would definetly do that, the beaches are very rocky & not worth going to

We did not like this port, and used it as an at sea day, as most did, lounging by the pool, we think if we booked a tour we woul dhave had a much better time

We did a ruins tour which was excellent. When we returned, we tried some snorkeling, and as everyone says, it was rocky and rough but I still did it and enjoyed it once I got out where the water was a bit deeper. The dance show was nice, as was the restaurant and shopping area, although limited. I liked this port, not a lot to do, but it was fine with me considering the busy schedule of activities we had planned for other ports.

Don't just stay at the cruise company port facility, venture out to www.mahahual.com/ It is a small village a short 25 minute walk down the beach from where the ships dock. Or take a $5 taxi ride there.
