This story is from a television station in Seattle:
A job cruising the Hawaiian Islands?
That's why more than a thousand people who showed up at an office in Renton, Washington.
Norwegian Cruise Lines is looking for 50 to 70 people to work on 2 new ships that will sail around Hawaii.
Earl Thomas has been searching for work, but the current job market has him
frustrated.
"Very tight, especially when you get past 50 years old. People don't tell
you they are not going to hire you because you are old, they just say they
are going to keep looking,"
Thomas has 5 years experience on small cruise ships, and hopes that will be
his ticket to Hawaii.
"It's inviting but the job security is more inviting than Hawaii. That's
nice but you also have to consider it's your job..not your vacation,"
It is not a vacation.
The jobs are mainly preparing food and cleaning.
Working 3 weeks straight.
7 days a week, 10 hours a day.
The manager of this worksource office says she surprised by the crowd
applying up for entry level jobs, and by their qualifications.
"I think it's a comment on how difficult is these days for people to
transition and find jobs,"
"You can't discriminate against jobs when you gotta pay a bill. They don't
care what kind of job you have. They just want the money,""
After waiting over an hour and a half Thomas got his interview.
He will have to wait a few weeks before he finds out if he is on his way to
Hawaii.
The first of the new ships, The Pride of America will begin sailing from
Hawaii next July. The new hires from our area will spend next spring
training on other Norwegian Cruise Ships.
