You are permitted to bring your own wine to dinner and pay a "corkage" fee (which is what your friend is probably referring to). As far as consuming on board purchases, of course you can drink in your own cabin. You just can't tote around a open bottle of rum with you.


UPDATE - as of April 2007, passengers are now permitted to bring up to one case of beer or soda on board with them. I personally think this is a mistake and lowers the class of passengers....but they now allow it.
