Ok....so a serious question::eek:

I am getting ready to start a project of replacing our double hung windows with vinyl replacements. I am keeping the original framework, and going for the drop in replacements from either Home Depot or Lowes. Question I have is…..based on your experience or that of friends/family… which window unit is do you feel is better?
Home Depot…… American Craftsman……….8500 series
Lowes……Pella…..ThermaStar

Mal..
I have just sent a word document to you on this. It is too long to copy here, and I have not had time to edit it. But it is a rating of a lot of windows.
I was not sure of the email, as I have tons of addresses for you and Judi. so sent it to a few.
check around, and if you have not got it.. let me know.

Pella is an excellent brand.

In NYC area, Lowe's tends to get a better customer satisfaction rating than Home Depot.

Good luck with your project.

Hubby just installed all the windows in the house with double hung replacement windows from JELD WEN VINYL WINDOWS. We got them on sale at Menards which is located in many states in the midwest. They look pretty good and are easy to install. I think they are a quality product. http://www.jeld-wen.com/info/vinylwindows.cfm?gclid=CLui9P_z9pQCFQfNIgodtUd-rQ

Remember to inspect each window for flaws or dents before purchase because they are a pain (pane :D) to wrap back up to take back.

Mal - Pella is a very respected name in windows. "Respected" certainly is more than I can say for bOB and Brucie. :grin

As for Home Depot versus Lowes, I think which one is better depends upon where you live - just as cell phone carriers vary on location (AT&T may be better one place, Verizon another, Sprint another, etc.).

Good luck - and when you finish, I may have some chores for you here. :grin

We just completed the whole windows and doors thing. We have Pella, and we really enjoy them. Lowe's is better for us here, as Home Depot doesn't offer as much service now as they once did. It's hard to find someone to even wait on you at Home Depot.

I'm going to guess you have standard sized windows. That's a plus because many homes don't. Mine was built in the late 50's so I found it was cheaper for me to use a local company that made custom windows. The quality and look is very good and priced better than the Pella ones I've seen sold at Lowes and Home Depot.

Thanks All for the feedback and laughs!!! :wave

This is going to be a long term project, and i am starting with four windows that are on the side of the house that faces the driveway, so if by chance the design and look of the windows change between now and when I do the next group it will not be as noticeable. As our house was built in the 1920's and still has the original windows (or what is left of them) there will be a lot of work in prepping the opening prior to installation. Hope to get started this weekend with storm window removal, and painting of existing window frame flashing.

I suspect I will need an OLIVE or two at days ends! :D

I have no idea BC! :dizzy

Been doing some more inet searching and finding that the Home Depot/American Craftsman(An Anderson Company) and Lowes/Pella/ThermaStar are running neck and neck as far as ratings. So far the choice is leaning toward the American Craftsman as it appears to be a more robust unit. Still more research though. However this weekend the project starts with removal of the old storm windows, prepping and painting flashing, and measuring for new units.

I'll try to remember to take some =photo to post when project is done!
