We're looking to stay pre-cruise at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel and I'm wondering if anyone has a better idea for a nice hotel close to the pier. Also do the hotels offer shuttles to the Pier? Thanks!

I dont know if all hotels offer a shutle to the pier, I know that NCL has pre stay packages with some of the hotels. We stayed at the Outrigger on the beach and it was unbelieveable. We took a limo to the pier and its was really inexpensive, off hand I am not sure how much it cost.

NCL used to use the Hilton Hawaiin Village as one of the hotels. There are only about 3 or 4 hotels right on the water, Outrigger is one and Hilton is one. the Hilton is about as nice a hotel as you can find in Hawaii especially if you can get the tapa or Rainbow tower. Staying there wouldn't be complete without eating at the Chinese restaurant: of course you will pay top dollar for your meal so better be prepared. Just my thoughts. NMNita

The Outrigger Reef Hotel is our favorite. It's right on Waikiki and I think it's in a better location than the Hilton Hawaiian Village. It's not too expensive, there's a McDonald's across the street and a super great little cafe that has delicious coconut syrup for pancakes and best of all, the little pier out in front of the hotel is a perfect spot to watch the sunset. It's an event there - everyone stops what they're doing and watches the sunset - then goes back to their business. 
I don't know of any Waikiki hotels that have shuttles to the cruise ship pier - it's quite a ways away. If you're on a strict budget, go with the City bus. It's very, very inexpensive and relatively clean and safe. Otherwise, catch a taxi - it's the fastest & most trouble-free way to get there.

I would have to agree about location: Outrigger versus Hilton. both are on the beach, most hotels are not. The Outrigger also has a little less expensive food, but the Hilton has nicer accommodations and is a prettier property. Either one will not dissappoint you.

Except for one thing: Shore House restaurant in the Outrigger. Best kept secret in Waikiki. Get a beachside table at sunset and you are in for a treat! Coconut encrusted, crab-stuffed Mahi mahi...mmmmmmmm...sun setting before your eyes...ooooh, ahhhh!

Don't go on the city bus. They will not allow you to being your suitcase on the bus unless it can sit on your lap. That's the rule. When you get to the airport, check out the "push button to call hotel / taxis / car service" panel. We used one of the car service. I can't remember exactly, but it is cheaper than a taxi. I can't remember how much now, but I think it's about $7 per person (I THINK). It took us from the hotel to the pier and then pier to the airport on the return. Very efficient way of travel.
I think LadyJag made some valid points. I too would be surprised at hotels offering complimentary cruise-drop off from Waikiki.
Traveling in Honolulu/Waikiki is real easy. Lots of taxis, city buses (can be a long wait depending on destination), car service. And don't forget to "hang loose"

Who would take a city bus with their luggage? I didn't mean for the original poster to do that! =eek :lol :lol Can you imagine lugging your suitcases up those narrow steps into the bus? :lol :lol :lol

Did you book with NCL?? If so then transfers from the hotel to the ship are included. We booked for April 2007 - a long way I know but it will come!! We booked the cruise with airfare & hotel directly through NCL and we are also staying at the Hilton (friends of ours stay each year and they love it) anyway, we have airport transfers from the airport to the hotel and from the ship to the airport & also transfers from the hotel to the ship included.

We stayed at The Renaissance a few years back which is located right next to the Hawaiian Hilton and it was Gr8. Taxi is your BEST bet to the pier as it should be VERY reasonable as most of the hotels are fairly close. Enjoy!!! :thumb

You can drop off your luggage with him, check in early and get your sign & sail cards before the rest of the folks on your cruise. Saves lots of time at embarkation. Also, there's a car rental place in the hotel and the beach is right across the street. All transfers are included when you book through NCL which is a huge plus because transfers can be pricey in Honolulu. :thumb
Even though I know Oahu very well and could manage everything on my own, I'm still using the cruise line's hotel package this July.

Staying at the Waikiki Marriott BOOKED THROUGH NCL was one of the smartest decisions we made. Even though NCL's computers at the hotel were down, when we got to the pier (we went on our own rather than waiting for the shuttle), we walked right past everyone, including double-diamond-deluxe Latitudes members and had our sign & sail cards within 3 minutes. We were among the first 12 people on board. The best part was just leaving our luggage in the room and having it show up magically in our PoH cabin. No muss, no fuss, no extra tips.

We're booked on the POA for the Nov 19th sailing, our very first cruise. Decided to go with the pre/post hotel package at the Marriott. We always prefer Marriott over just about any other line & having criscrossed this country several dozen times we've stayed at just about all of them. Sounds like picking Marriott again was a great choice as always!

Marriots are a good choice, we still prefer Hiltons over Marriots, but I think most of us can be happy with either one regardless of the brand under the umbrella. I guess in Hawaii, I still would choose the Hilton Hawaiian Village and when traveling throughout the USA on road trips we look for Hampton Inns. That being said, and Marriott being the NCL hotel in Hawaii it is the place to stay.

Just returned from Hawaii a month ago. Do not stay at the Reef unless you like construction and noise. Also , the Hilton's "lagoon" is completely under construction also. Big ugly hole with a fence around it.
May I suggest the other Outrigger hotel on the beach, called (lol) "The Outrigger on the Beach". Dukes restaurant and bar are there, and the beach is great right there.

There are a ton of Outrigger hotels; they are a large chain of hotels.
I'm wondering if the Reef you're talking about is a different one? Where was it located? The one I was talking about is directly on Waikiki Beach by the black cement dock that runs along the jetty on the beach. :? :?

We've decided to stay at the ResortQuest at the Executive Centre Hotel. It's location (1088 Bishop Street) is what convinced us to pay $230 + for the one night. Within walking distance to great restaurants, shopping, and the Cruise Terminal. Of course, we'll be taking a taxi to and from the terminal. Oh, and breakfast is included, as well.
