We dock on Sept 18 at 8:00a, our plane does not leave until the next day at 1:00p. Does anyone have any idea where we could stay that we would not be too far from the airport and still be able to see some places in Rome. Do any of the hotels pick you up at the pier? If not what is the best way to get there?

What a perfect time to be in Italy! We have been in Rome several times but never following a cruise. The best suggestion would probably be to ask the cruise line what transportation they recommend to get to Rome. Best to have your transportation completely figured out before arriving. You don't have a lot of time and it would be a shame to waste it searching for the train station or bus. I guess there are a few questions to ask: Is this your first visit to Italy or Rome? Will you have a lot of luggage? Are you a relaxed, slower moving traveler or are you more of the fast moving, fit-3-days-of-sightseeing-into-one type? Let me know a little more info and we can give you a few more tips.

I assume you are flying out of DaVinci/Fumicino airport. It is a good distance from the city. If you stay the night in Rome so you can really see some sights and enjoy the piazza night life (wonderful), you can take the train in the morning directly to the airport terminal. You will probably wish you had a few more days to really see Rome. Learning some basic Italian phrases will be very helpful and make it more fun for you.

We just got home two weeks ago from our cruise on the Galaxy - just wonderful.

We had all our arrangements made before we arrived in Rome for our 4 day pre-cruise stay. We booked transportation from romecabs.com, fabulous. On time, great rates and very helpful. Stefano got a lot of business from our message board and did a wonderful job accommodating what turned out to be a large group. He gave us tours in Rome, picked us up at the airport, drove us to our hotel, drove us to the pier to get the ship and returned us back to the airport to go home. You can reach him at : allagrande@hotmail.it.

I woud suggest you find some others who will also be staying in ome for the night and coordinate dropping them off at their hotels. If you are sharing the cab fee with others the cost will be very small. I know the ship was charging $85pp for transportation. Our cab was only $125. Check it out, you won't be sorry.

Have a wonderful cruise
