How Cold Do They Crank Up The Air Conditioning On Board?

I really don't like air conditioning at all and am concerned that I may FREEZE on-board the Summit especially during dinner. I would love to wear my skimpy cocktail dresses but am I going to freeze? And advice?

I doubt if you will freeze but you certainly might be cool if you are at all inclined to be effected easily by Air conditioning. Depending on where the ship will be and the weather outside etc the temp inside can and does vary. There is not cure other than something to throw over your shoulders and of course not so fancy dresses, sorry. They try to maintain a constant temp and the larger ships are easier to control. The M class are way better that the ships of just several years ago.

Seabob,

I'm concerned about air conditioning too. I'll be on the Summit in May in the Mediterranean. How cool is it in the dining room - in the sixties, seventies? Also, do the staterooms have individual temperature controls like in hotels or are they all kept at the same temperature? I need to know if I can pack just some nighties or do I need warmer PJs. Just how cold and windy does it get on the top decks at night when you're out at sea?

Thanks!

Interesting question and one which I find a real problem!! On the ships that cater mainly for the Americans the air conditioning is freezing but when we have cruised say from Rome or Barcelona wwith the Italians and Spanish its much warmer. I asked someone about this and apparantly the consensus is the Americans want it freezing and the Europeans want it warm. If you find it too cold keep complaining!

Never been in the Med so if that happens hmmmm. Anywhere in the world it's windy on the top decks especially if you combine the ships speed against a head wind. May in the Med. should be nice.

We travel on the Infinity mostly and experienced the Caribbean and west coast including Alaska. Just talked to my DW about this and she and I really couldn't say what the actual temps were. She says that in the dining room it's fine to start but after all the people are in there over a meal time it's too hot. Me, ? usually in a Blazer and I'm comfortable. I am the cool person and she's hot :)
So I guess all I can say is that it varies quite a bit. It's not like it's drafty it's just up or down. You open a door to outside in Alaska vs the Caribbean and a whole bunch of things different happen to the inside of a ship.

Rooms on the Infinity (same class as your Summit) all have thermostats. That being said temps in any room on any ship depends on how things are working in your rooms general area. Cabins without balconies and those adjoining are easier to control. When we arrive it's the first thing that we check to ensure it's working. If you need it cooler, if turned down too quickly things tend to get out of whack. I think that if a group on a system are all trying to cool off at once the system has trouble keeping up so to speak. We like it cooler at night. Warm never seems to be a problem aboard a ship.

Thanks. Have you every been in an aft balcony cabin on Infinity? We like it cooler at night also, so just wondering how aft balcony affects temperature up or down.

Not personally but we have several pairs of friends that cruise a lot. One of them even has a gif. calling themselves "Aft Balcony Snobs" No temp change concerns as far as they are all concerned. M class aft cabins have "Huge" balconies but you do lose some privacy to those above you when out in the sun. Lots of covered area that is private though.

BTW they are not actually snobs. :)
Have a look at their websites

Just to clarify, while there IS a temp control switch in the cabin, it does not permit actual tempertaure settings. It goes from red to blue (warm/cold). It will only do down to about 72 if A/C is left on constantly and you don't open your balcony often. The public rooms are cooler (due to all the people - natural heat) - so temps are set at about 68 I'd guess...but as Bob says, as the evening wears on, dining rooms and casino get warm. Disco is kept the coldest for obvous reasons....you're dancing.

Outside decks VERY windy at night for women....take the hair spray. Lower pool area more protected from wind during day. Personally, I am always warm in my cabin, but some people are just always cold and might need warmer sleepwear. It's never COLD on the outer decks at night (especially if you've had a few cocktails) but definitely windy on the upper decks. It actually feels great, if you're "done" for the day as far as appearance goes....I like to just stand there and feel the strong winds through my hair.

BSeabob, thanks for the great websites as well as the info! It took me some time, but I just loved reading all the info on your friends' travelogues as well as all of the beautiful pics, especially the info on ports that we will be visiting.:thumb

Conniemc, I'll just have to hope that it's cool enough to sleep in the rooms in the evening. I'll keep note of the hairspray tip and maybe wear hair up in the evenings to avoid problems with warmer areas (casinos, etc.) and to avoid that wind! Thanks.

I think they should have special menopause sailings with all temps at 65 F and ceiling fans

Seriously, despite my constant "warmth", I found all the public rooms far more comfy than the stateroom. I really like it cool when I sleep, just couldn't ever get it cool enough. If you can sleep naked without a blanket, you'll be fine...X(

The only place I found it too chilly on the Infinity is the MDR. Just bring a pretty cardigan with you for those moments when you feel a little chilly (particular on formal nights or anytime when your shoulders are bare).

I just returned from my cruise and would say that I was chilly at dinner and wish I had brought more nice evening sweaters/wraps to wear.
