How do cabin upgrades work?

We are guaranteed for category B/C (balcony cabin on Deck A or B, I believe) on the Grand Princess, sailing Oct 5. A specific cabin number has not yet shown up on our cruise personalizer.

I have heard people say that upgrades are quite common with Princess. What kinds of upgrades are likely? Same type of room in a different area of the ship, or do people ever get upgraded to a better category of room (such as a suite)? What experiences have people had.

I have read from others that we may not see that cabin number showing up until closer to the sailing. Does the fact that it hasn't shown up yet mean that we might be more likely to get an upgrade. Please advise if you know. Many thanks.

You will hear many stories about how the upgrades work ... this is the true one. The upgrade fairy sits at a table with a bottle fo vodka. By the time the bottle is empty, she has randomly chosen who to upgrade and where to upgrade them to. (Honest! )

Well, it sure isn't by number of cruises or days on Princess. I've only received an upgrade on Princess 1 time.

I second Cruiseaholics post, On our FIRST Princess cruise we were upgraded from an inside to a outside with balcony, really!. We had booked a year in advance and I think the ship was half empty, so we got real lucky. We didn't find out until a week before our cruise when our ta phoned us. Since it wasn't on our documents we assumed she was wrong, but when we got to the pier , we were in fact given the great cabin!
No ones really knows how it works( or we'd all be trying for the penthouse suite! lol)
Here's to hoping , thats all we have , hope!

We've been upgraded from outside to balcony a couple of times. In theory, the upgrades are prioritized by your status with Princess, how much you paid, and how far in advance you've booked ...but I think the fairy with the vodka theory is just as likely...

Well I guess the vodka-swilling fairy knew that I booked last minute at a discount. We just found out that our cabin is A202, a balcony cabin at the VERY front of the ship. I believe this is within the B/C category as booked. I will make sure to pack my seasickness bands, we might get alot of movement up there.

We had a balcony at the very front of the ship (baja deck) the rocking was not bad and the view was great, also could sort of see into the bridge area. you'll probalby love your cabin!

Been in that 1st cabin at the front of the ship on the Golden and the movrment should be minor but the NOISE will be a BIG factor as U will hear a LOT more noise. U will still be on a cruiseship though so enjoy!!!

What is the source of the noise in the front cabins? I thought the engine was at the back of the ship. Someone did mention that you can hear the anchor go down from the front. What other source of noise is there?

We had cabin 201 or 210( can't remember which one) on Baja deck. It was the first one on the starboard(right) side of the ship. We don't recall any noise, may-be on the port side? Einstien, what was the noise you heard?

One source of extra noise up there is the sea crashing on the bow. A202 is directly above where the ship breaks the wake... that's not really a bad noise though. You're too high up to hear much from the anchor going up & down.
