I am new to all of this and was wondering how upgrading your cabin works. Iam on the veranda deck in an interior cabin. It is a 4E. although I dont know what that means? Does that have something to do with if I can upgrade or not. The rest of the cabins on that deck are suites. How do I go about trying to get moved across the hall to a balcony cabin???????? Who and when do I ask??? Thanks!! Niki

If you wish to pay the additional charge to get a higher cabin category [which, depending on your cruise, may be rather low], talk to whoever booked your cruise. Upgrades you don't pay for are a decision made solely by Carnival [or any cruise line]. You have no input.

A 4E cabin is an inside cabin [no window] on the deck you're currently on. In general, most category 4 "inside" cabins are similar. The higher the letter....the higher the deck.

If you want a possibility of getting an upgrade you should book a guarantee cabin. For example if you book oceanview cabin on a specific deck you are guaranteed at least that cabin...nothing on a lower deck and definately not an inside cabin. But you do have the possibility of moving up a deck and staying in an oceanview but you also might wind up with a balcony cabin if it's available. I've never really heard of an upgrade if you booked a specific cabin. Talk to your agent about maybe booking a guarantee room instead then you might have a slight chance of being upgraded. You can also check with your TA and pay the difference for an upgrade if it's available.

Babuska is right, if you book as a guarantee you are more likely to be upgraded. This is merely part of the nature of a guarantee. The defining characteristic of a guarantee booking is that the cruise line has the ability to move you about at will. They can put you where ever they have an empty slot. So it's not so much that it is an upgrade, as just that they found it convenient to stick you there. That is why they sell guarantees cheaper, it is easier for them..

Aside from that, Upgrades of any consequence are not all that common. By that I mean, almost all upgrades remain within the same class of cabin type. ie: they are inside to inside, or outside to outside, etc. I'm not saying inside to outside is impossible having experienced that once myself. But it is rare.

So even if you are upgraded by the cruise line, the move you get will almost certainly be from one inside cabin to another inside cabin.

Take a look at the deck plans for your ship. I don't know which ship you are on, but suppose it's the Triumph. On that ship there are two more catagories of inside cabin higher than your 4E. If you were upgraded it's likely to merely be to a 4F or 4G. You'd still be in an inside cabin. And trust me, the view from the interior of an inside cabin on the ninth deck is exactly the same as from the interior of an inside cabin on deck two. Such an upgrade is no great thrill, and hardly worth considering an upgrade.

And if you are still hoping the cruise line will upgrade you, remember this, the cruise line is far more inclined to offer those nice upgrades to their many-times-over-past-passengers.

If you really have your heart set on a better cabin, then you really ought to just pay for it.

Thanks E...that was very informative!

Gayle said was I was going to....first timers are less likely to get upgrades than returning guests.

I booked 4 cruises as guarantee== 3 of those cruises I was a past guest- I did not get upgraded not even one deck.
Being a past guest or not doesnt pay into the mix.

I found the higher you paid the better your chances.
Someone booking a cruise that is a few weeks away will get upgraded before someone who booked a year ago

Just be sure your PVP doesn't select a cabin for you. Ours did and now we have no chance of an upgrade (which we have always received when booking just a guaranty). We were told for this cruise we could have an automatic upgrade because we are past guests - the PVP evidently thought we wanted her to select a room for us.
Oh well - at least we know where we'll be!

Nikki, We have had a 4E on the Sensation. Yes, a balcony cabin would have been nice, but MUCH more expensive. ::eek:
The Verandah deck, although we were in the interior cabin, was
F A B U L O U S !!!!
You are just a few steps away from all the action. Walk down the hall forward, and you are on a huge balcony that wraps around the front of the ship. Walk a few steps aft, and you are overlooking the Lido deck pool area.
I asked the same question about moving into a balcony cabin across the hall, but, for the money, I would recommend staying right where you are. It is a short hallway with few cabins, so there is very little foot traffic near your cabin (quiet). The spa, steamrooms, sauna are all directly above you 1 flight of stairs up. You are less than 50 feet from 4 elevators. The main lounge is 2 floors directly below you......need I go on????????

PS. We had cabin V8. We loved it!

An upgrade was a mistake to me. You find out when it is time to leave as the walk downstairs or elevator is treacherous.
An inside cabin is aninside cabin. Vernada was horrivle because being below the Lido was like having a pack of elephants. my advice is stay low, and if you can afford it have a window.
