How do I pack for 12 days?

Hi All,

I have only been on one other cruise. It was a 3 day cruise to Ensenada. It's not too hard to pack for 3 days. However, in June my wife, our oldest (11yr old) son and I will be cruising on the Freedom for 12 days. Any suggestions from you seasoned travelers on what we need to pack and how I fit all of it in my suitcase?

Also, we will be boarding the ship in Italy.... traveling to Greece, Turkey, and back to Italy. Is it worth the time to plan some of our own excursions, or just pay for the excursions offered?

Last question.... my son loves basketball.... Anyone know if there is a basketball hoop on the ship?

Thanks for your responses!

Start making a "packing list". Work under the assumption you'll do your laundry [or have it done] midway through the cruise. Put the list aside for a few days. Return to it and ask "do I really need this". Redo list as often as necessary until you conclude any more cutbacks will result in "indecent exposure" charges.

Pack to whatever final list you come up with. Take list with you...tape it to the inside of your closet door. Just like Mom did when you went to camp. If, on Monday morning, it says sons wears gray CSI t/underwear/blue socks/jeans...he wears that. That way you won't wonder "did I wear that. I forget."

Lastly, pack to hours [not days] something is worn. If your son wears slacks to dinner one night--and removes them immediately after dinner--they were not worn a full day. But just for 3 hours. Use that fact when determining your packing list.

On our 10 night caribbean cruise - I did laundry. We always travel with just carry-ons and have got it down to a sciene. I make sure that what I bring can be worn with other items. For example all of the shirts go with all of the pants and I'm able to mix casual items with dressier items. That way I can minimize. I bring enough clothes for 1/2 - 3/4 of the time we are going to be gone, then I do laundry. For me that is easier than having to lug around a big suitcase. The weather will be nice in June. Warm weather clothes don't take up as much room as winter clothes.

Good luck - I can send you my Caribbean packing list if you like, just let me know. Patricia
