How do they go about upgrading if you cruised before?

I was just wondering how do you get the best upgrade on Carnival if you are a past cruiser with them?

As a general rule, upgrades are simply "luck of the draw". In 22 cruises, I have been upgraded 3 times, usually within the same cabin type (inside to inside, outside to outside, etc.) Only on one occasion did I get upgraded from an inside to an outside cabin. You can improve your odds of getting an upgrade by booking a cabin "guarantee" rather than an assigned cabin. You will be guaranteed to be assigned a cabin within your guarantee catagory or better. Obviously you can be placed in a location that you may find somewhat undesirable. That is just the chance that you have to take! Hope this helps!

best way-- book at the last minute and pay the highet price.
I booked my first 4 carnival cruises as guarantees and not one time did I get upgraded--not even to another deck.

Please dont book a guarantee thinking because you are a past quest it will happen to yu before someone who has not sailed....it doesnt work that way.

Because I book over a year out with VERY cheap prices my chances of being upgraded are almost nil. (My liberty cruise is sailing at 225 more pp then what we paid...) I now pick set cabins.

I agree with Serene, I book specific cabin's. The garuntee does not work for us. I suggest booking real early to get the best price. Years ago I would wait up until 60 day's or so prior and book but there are so many more people cruising now that you cannot do that any more if you want a decent cabin. Viet

Sorry, but being a past guest has nothing to do with being upgraded. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason. Book early, book late - doesn't seem to matter. Just do NOT book a guarantee and expect an upgrade, as you'll more than likely be disappointed. I book ONLY assigned cabins, so I KNOW I'll be happy with my cabin and location.

Which is the best location on the ship to have your cabin? We have the inside staterooms, I believe.(I've never cruised before, but will be on Carnival Miracle in March)

There is no "best" cabin. Everyone has a different preference. Do not book with the expectation of an upgrade. You may get it but most likely will not. And then it usually is only with in categories -- inside to inside, outside to outside, etc. Past guest has nothing to do with it. My friend, frequent past guest, recently book a inside guarrante and got a 4A directly under the casino on a sister ship to the Miracle. It was very noisy.

I prefer a cabin in the center of the ship, as low as possible with cabins above and below. Top deck of cabins receives noise from the lido deck above on almost all Carnival ships. Noise coming from below is not as bad as noise coming from above -- chairs being moved, walking etc.

How can you avoid having a cabin under a casino or noisy room like that? Can you make that request? We will be taking this cruise with my sister and her two teens too and requested side-by-side rooms since her daughter is legally blind and my son has some special needs as well...we are hoping they assign our rooms close together. When do they assign rooms? Thanks!!

You can either get a carnival brochure or go onto there web site and look at the ship you are interested in and pick your cabin's that way. this is what I do because I don't want to be near the elevator's or stairs.I also don't want to be above or below public area's.Try doing it this way and you will get the cabin's you want. We were never told that we could pick our cabins. We thought that they assigned the cabins and whatever we got, we got. We did however put in a request to have our rooms close to one another...thanks for this tip. I wonder if it is getting too late now...we sail in just over 3 weeks from now?

Lillian- did you book with carnival?

Since you need two cabins together the agent shoul dhave booked you into set cabins. Booking a gurantee we booked kids into one cabin and us into another. They were put on the RIveria deck and we were on the upper deck. Thank god they were older.

For first time cruisers the best cabin to book is low and misdhip.

Booking a gurantee you cant request not to be put in an area that is unsiotable--thats the chance you take of booking a guarantee... you can be placed anywhere.
BUT-- we were under the casino on the Legend and nver heard nothing--not even a dropped nickle.

On the spirit class ships there are cabins located right next tot he disco but the insulation on these newer ships are fabulous

No, we booked through a travel agent (back in August). She told us that we would have to write a letter to Carnival stating our request and we did. We haven't heard anything yet, although we did email Carnival last evening to ask...still waiting to hear back from them. We just don't want to be too far away because we know that our kids will want to hang out together and we don't want have to bring them back and forth to rooms.

Your travel agent should take care of this for you -- that is what they were paid for.

Yes, I just received a message from my travel agent telling us that we were upgraded from an inside stateroom to a room with a 'partial' view....meaning there is some obstruction to the view. Would this be considered a better room than the inside stateroom??

Yes. Unless you do not want daylight. In my view any window is better than an inside. The Miracle has a lot of 5A cabins that have French doors looking out to the bottom of lifeboats -- these are called "ostructed view" cabins. 7A cabins have the tops of the lifeboats beside the balconies and these are also obstructed views. Contact the TA and get your cabin numbers and then go to:

http://www.carnival.com/Ship_Detail.aspx?shipCode=MI

and look at the deck plans.

It says that we have french doors with railings...does this mean that there is also a balcony?

No balcony, French doors open inward from the glass railing. View is of the bottom of the lifeboats and/or the supporting mechanism for the lifeboats. Not a good view at all but plenty of light and fresh air and sea noise if you want it. Send me your e-mail address in a PM and I'll send you a picture of the outside.
