how do you top your tree?

We usually put an angel, sometimes a star, and sometimes a spire. I like the angel best.

White or colored lights? steady or blinking?

We like the steady burning multicolor "tulip" lights. You know the old fashioned kind that has the clear plastic "leaves" around the outside that reflect the light? We used to do all white steady lights.

Formal tree or family tree? Family tree, some homemade ornaments (this was different before Oliver). we have to put his homemade stuff on the tree - which warms up the tree, and I love it.

Real or artificial. With such a busy schedule, we've gone artificial the past few years, plus it's safer as far as fire hazards. We got a nice artificial one a few years back. Miss the real smell, though.

Is you tree up yet? Ours is up and lighted, but needs decorating. We spent a lot of yesterday pulling down a dead tree in the back yard. So glad that it is down, because it was well positioned to fall on a neighbor's shed. So, it's down now, and everyone and everything is safe. :)

i always have a real tree. this years' is especially fragrant. i do love the steady white lights, so that's what i have. i used to have two trees: one formal, and one family. now i have just the one tree with all the ornaments i've collected since i was twenty (i'm now 47).
i also hang red metallic beads on the tree. it's funny you should ask about the top.... my tree is up and that is the only thing not done. just can't decide what i want this year.

We use to have two trees, one formal and one “familyâ€Â. Formal would have white lights and family on would have color. I split up all the family ornaments and gave them to the three girls, just keeping a few for myself. We now have a formal tree in the great room, 7’ slim artificial with steady burning white lights. I broke the blown glass tree topper this year so I decided to try and put the fiber optic angel on top. This thing is on the heavy side so I jerry rigged it with wiring and it has stayed up! (so far). In Leatherneck’s TV room we have a 4’ 1950 era antique aluminum tree that we decorate with Marine Corp memorabilia and other patriotic items. We top it with an American Flag.

We have an artificial tree that is probably 10 years old and needs to be replaced next year. The lights we use depends on the color scheme the teen wants to go with... this year, instead of all colors, we went with the blue, white and silver colors. So, the lights are clear. With that color scheme, the topper is an old fashioned Kris Kringle with a white robe and blue trim, etc. Glad she picked those colors, because the wrapping this year is white glossy paper with blue and silver ribbon, so it's perfect!

Here you go Hucc. We have a couple sets of Fisher-Price Holiday Little People under the tree for the grandkids to play with. Also have the Little People nativity scene that I have to put out yet. I have to move that urn with the cat tails and get something different for there yet...maybe a second large nutcracker.

We used to have two trees also. One formal in the living room and the kids tree in the family room. The kids tree had artifcial candy garland, and ornaments that they made. It had a Angel on the top. it was a real tree. The living room tree had white lights red cranberry garland with glass, and a collection of ornaments. We had our village under that tree.

We now just have one artifcial tree. It's in the living room. We do have a small table tree in the family room. Neither tree has blinking lights.

We decided this year - since it will just be Jim and I to skip the tree - - Well, then we went to my mom and dad's for Thanksgiving and she had a 4 foot Fiber Optic tree. Jim just loved it - so I bought on yesterday and we are going to put it up tonight.

Will take some photos and post tomorrow.

HUCC - - - get the car sent - the one's that look like trees. Put them on you artificial tree to give it the real tree sent. I have also seen a can spray fragrance at the tree shop that smells like the real tree!

We used to have two trees, one formal and one family. The formal was over 10 feet tall for our great room (HUGE) and it was silver and purple with solid white lights. Since we moved and are in a rental now, it does not fit. Hopefully we can settle next year and I can pull it out. For now we have the family one. DD loves putting it up. Will probably do it next week.

Hi Ya Hucc. Well this year Mike and I did put the big tree up. This is only the third year in 6 Christmas' I have been here. It is so dry here that Mike really would prefer not to put a real tree up. Plus the trees are pretty lousy looking here. Not like being back east. So the big artificial one is up. It comes with white lights on it but I added about 500 colored non-blinking lights this year and it looks very pretty. Audra has most of our decorations. I gave them to her when I moved here. There were so many memories in those ornaments but I felt if I was starting over I needed to leave those precious ornaments to her. And I get to see them when I'm there. Mike and I have begun to collect ornaments together.

Joanne and Mark also sent us a real potted 2 foot tree which is on the table. If I can keep it alive I will plant it. It is very cute.

We have a 6 ft. artificial tree. We have several ornaments that our boys made in school many years ago when they were small. We always use those, along with lights, etc. We have an angel that we top the tree with that is at least 40 years old. I have repaired it several times over the years but since we have used it ever since the boys were babies, we still hang on to it.
Hope it lasts another 40 years and I'm still around to put it on the tree top !! :wave

My artificial tree is 19 years old and still looks great. The lights are non-blinking, colored. The tree topper is a spire - I bought a santa to put on top, but son Jeff insists on putting up the glass spire we had when he was a child. The ornaments are all one of a kind and I try to add a new ornament every year. Last year Jeff gave me a special ornament - it's a flashing Krispy Kreme "hot now" sign - love it! It's the only thing that moves on the tree since the bubble lights died. Favorite ornaments: the good luck koi or carp, the mirrored disco ball and the traditional German pickle. We put the tree up a week ago.

:wave Hey Hucc..

we have an artificial tree we bought just last week, it has all the travel ornaments, ornaments from friends, and Mark, and I buy a new one every year.. it's in "our parlour".. The tree topper is a lit angel

and after we get home from Maine this weekend, we on the way home will cut a real tree at a tree farm on the way home..there has always been a live tree for our kids, and I imagine it'll still be that way for a long time.. it goes downstairs and it's the Family tree..it's topper is a star.. we have ornaments from when all 5 of the kids were babies on up..and we have always bought them a new ornament every year.. we gave the girls who have their own places a bunch of theirs.. we kept a few special ones like Denise.. and then have ones we bought.. it also has lights that include gingerbread men, candy canes, and Santas..the main lights are huge bulb coloured that look like the old fashioned ones.. the upstairs tree has coloured too.. I have never ever had a Neiman Marcus fancy bows all colour coordinated tree..I do admire them.. but they are not my thing..with the matching wrapping paper, bows, tree trims etc.. it works for some folks..but not in my lifetime have I had a Martha Stewart perfect house..my house is picked up,and not cluttered as a rule..but I have not had a Formal anything in my life.. but it is "lived in".
I am Yankee peasant stock.. with poor forebears from the old country..:grin.. so it's whatever the kids have made, and been added to over the years..and that also what Mark grew up with.. so thats our comfort level..:lol.. it's so nice to read all the posts.and see the really fantastic time and effort involved in the ways lot's of folks do have it!! I enjoy their efforts...Thanks so much Hucc...:)..Joanne

I've had a Kmart, red bows and plastic silver beads tree all formal with white lights before, Joanne :grin :lol

No "needless markup" in this house. I'd rather give to charity.
