I don't think #8 (the first part) had anything to do with it. Princess doesn't hope to "wow" their first time passengers. Most likely, they needed that cabin you were in because it was a good price to advertise. (Everything's about the bottom dollar - they ARE in this business to make money.)I do think the agent has a lot to do with the upgrades. How well does he/she know their area rep.? Do they have a good rapport and have known each other for quite awhile? Most of all, it's pure luck and past cruises with the company, IMO.
