How to keep in contact with the kids

We'll be cruising on the Fascination in February - 10th anniversary trip, first time away from the kids (ages 7 & 5). So as a nervous Mommy, I will need to be able to check in with the kiddies. What is the best way to do that on the ship? I read the forum on using my Sprint cell phone - would it be better to try to use Skype onboard the ship and pay the 55 cents a minute (if I get the 100 minute plan)? Has anyone used video chat while on the ship? And do the computers in the Internet cafe have webcams? We were hoping not to bring our own computer, for fear of theft, but will if it will help us connect back home.

Thanks in advance!
Jen

When our daughter (she was age 10 at the time of the cruise) was on our cruise we used walkie talkies. They worked great and we always knew where she was.

Walkie talkies would be a good idea if she was taking the kids with her - but she isn't.

Jen - the internet service on the ship is like stepping back in time 15+ years ago. There is no web cam and the speed is worse than dial-up. Even if you brought your own laptop - it would be slow.

I don't know what the charges are for using the ships satelite for cell phone service. They do offer it though. There is a charge on top of what you pay for roaming. The cheapest route is to wait until you get to a port and call from there.

cheapest way to use a cellphone on cruise

My carrier charges 4.99 per minute on board, anyone have any ideas, maybe someone has experienced
a better or more cost effective way if I have to call

Use calling cards and call from ports. Check with your cabin steward, they know the best places and the best prices.

When DH & I took our first cruise on the Holiday in Sept, 2008, I called our carrier and asked for their advise. I was told that texting is only $0.50 (incoming & outgoing) on our plan. Your carrier should be able to tell you what texting and phone charges will be on ship and on land. FYI - keep your phone off when not in use. If someone calls and your phone rings, you will still be charged. If your phone is off and it goes to voicemail, there is not charge. Good Luck - Have a good cruise!!!
