Walkie talkies would be a good idea if she was taking the kids with her - but she isn't. Jen - the internet service on the ship is like stepping back in time 15+ years ago. There is no web cam and the speed is worse than dial-up. Even if you brought your own laptop - it would be slow. I don't know what the charges are for using the ships satelite for cell phone service. They do offer it though. There is a charge on top of what you pay for roaming. The cheapest route is to wait until you get to a port and call from there.
