I LOVE this new kitchen gadget!

There I was, wandering through Target, picking up some baggies, when what to my wandering eyes should appear but a new gadget! It's a Reynolds Handi-Vac! Remember those old food vac bags that we would put meat or other foods in, stick it in a vac sealer that would suck the air out of it so we could pop it in the freezer? This is like that, but instead of expensive sealer bags that were wide enough for a rolling pin, these bags are basically re-engineered zip lock baggies! Put your food either the smaller or the larger bag, seal it, and grab the Handi-Vac. It's about the size of a flashlight, and has a vacuum head on it the size of a quarter. On the baggie is a "porthole" for removing the air. It's quick and effective. I love it!

Are the bags big enough to hold things like wet swimsuits, etc? Could have use on cruises ... Not have to pack wet things with the rest of your stuff ... Saving space in the suitcase ... etc.

I wouldn't put too many leftovers in the freezer that aren't liquid, like spaghetti sauce or something like that, but I do freeze extra chicken if I buy more than I need. And CC, it's difficult to say you got food poisoning from leftovers you ate, because depending on the bacteria involved, it could take 24 hours to several weeks for effects to show. That's why CDC has such a hard time pinning down reports of food poisoning.... people usually can't remember what they ate 1 week ago...

Glo I think it sounds like a neat device. I'm going to take a look at it. Will it only work with the Reynolds bags? Are they expensive.

I buy meat and freeze it with a vacuum sealer, but he bags are so expensive. So this would be cheaper?

Thanks for the share, Glo

Reggae, at Target, the unit was $10 and the bags were about $2.22 each box. There are 14 bags in the quart size, and 9 bags in the gallon size. Only the reynolds bags will work, because they have the little "porthole" 1-way valve in them.

Thanks for the info Glo. I like to buy large packages of meat and break them down into meal size servings for the freezer. This will be great! I like to make extras and freeze for another meal when possible, I am just too rushed sometimes for cooking and eating out gets expensive. I'll have to pick one of these up next time I am out.

I wonder if this gadget will work on those storage bags where you have to use a regular vacuum to take the air out? If so, that would make packing before and after a cruise much easier! Hmmmm.....would make a GREAT holiday gift if it indeed would work on those Spacebags!

Thanks for the info!

OOH! Hmm, interesting thought. I'll try it, but I suspect the valve on the packing bags is larger then the valve on the food baggies. But I'll check it out and let you know...
