"It Was Just My IMAGINATION!" - Review by YoRay

Carnival Imagination. 1/16/03. Review

(sing this part to the tune of The Temptations’ “Just My Imaginationâ€Â)

“Each day from my balcony, I watch the blue sea passing by.

I say to myself, ‘You’re such a lucky guy’.

To have a ship like this, is truly a dream come true.

Of all the sailors in the world, she now belongs to youâ€Â.

“It was just my Imagination running away with me.

It was just my Imagination sailing away with me.â€Â

……………………………………………………………

We flew from Hartford(6 degrees) to Miami(76 degrees) via USAir. Security agents were thorough, very polite and didn’t mind that I was smuggling booze in my carry-on – which I later moved to my checked bag in Miami before embarkation. We stayed overnight at the Travel Inn in downtown Miami because they had free shuttle pick-up at the airport, and to Bayside and to the pier. All for 44 bucks. The hotel is about 10 years overdue for a makeover, but it was clean and served the purpose. It has a restaurant and a bar and there’s a Winn Dixie across the street for any last minute items. They just happened to be having a beer sale…and pretty good chicken wings too. I’d stay there again, but don’t know if I’d recommend it to a picky person if you know what I mean. If you’re looking for up-scale beachfront, this isn’t it. Bottom line…it’s a sufficient inexpensive bed, with chow, drinks & free transportation!

We got to terminal 8 at 11:55am. and were in our cabin at 12:30. Skippers Club didn’t buy us anything because the Carnival staff was pumped and ready for us. There was no line. Actual boarding began at 12:15. It was the slickest & quickest embarkation I’ve ever been through. Thumbs up to this particular Carnival port crew!

I had been concerned about “psychedelic neon glitz†due to the photos I’d seen of the ship on various websites, but aside from the atrium, which isn’t really bad, and one purple and yellow barroom, this 8 year old ship is really nice. It looks brand new and is very well maintained. I was particularly impressed with the Egyptian motif. The crew and staff, in general, are obviously veterans who know their jobs. All are very polite, accommodating, and seem to maintain a high morale.

U103 is a cat.12 balcony suite, and I didn’t tell my wife I booked it. The surprise worked and she loved it. (but who wouldn’t?). Very spacious and well laid out, with a sectioned living room that opens to the balcony. A big bathroom with a whirlpool tub, walk-in closet, safe, vanity, fridge and bar. Did I mention the balcony? It’s so nice, we spent half the cruise there. We’d agreed we were cruising for the ride – not the ports, because we’d been to them. Problem is…how do I downgrade from here? The cabin stewardess did a perfect job for us throughout, and so did room service, and I tipped them well.

My other favorite hangout was the Dream Bar. It was open to the promenade on one side and the casino on the other. The first day aboard, I introduced us to the bartender and told her we liked our Martini’s & Manhattan’s big & strong, and that’s how we got them for the rest of the cruise. Next door to dream bar, there’s the Shangri La lounge, where we’d hang when it was open. I kept telling them that they had it wrong..â€ÂNo - it’s ‘Shangrilq’†But they still hadn’t changed it by the end of the cruise. Sorry Sara, I tried. (I wanna refund!)

Neither of us did well at the casino… and I don’t want to talk about it.

The Food Deck Marathon: By day 2, I could make it from U103 midship, to the aft elevator, up to the pizza parlor on Lido, grab 4 slices of whatever was ready, and be back in under10 minutes. First I would call room service and order the buckets of beer, then scramble for the Food Deck and try to make it back before the buckets arrived. I only beat them once. Meaning…room service is fast! Even when we weren’t hungry, we’d go to the Food Deck and cruise the buffets - and guess what…eat! Everything was very good.

The service and meals in the Pride dining room were great. I didn’t get any of that lousy food I’ve been reading about, and I tried just about everything at one time or another. Our waiter had a great sense of humor and, as busy as he was, he was always there. There wasn’t one meal that I would complain about, but I can compliment all of them. I’ll say it again, the crew and staff on this ship have it together. At the “Last Supper†(lol), they gave us nice 11â€Âx14†paintings of the Imagination. I’m making frames for them now.

We didn’t do all of the shows, but the ones we attended were entertaining. They cancelled the big one due to “rough seasâ€Â(?), and rescheduled it. The CD, Marahscalh Stanton, was pretty good. A regular James Brown (“I Feel Goodâ€Â). There were plenty of shows and activities to keep everyone entertained. You couldn’t possibly do them all, so it was “pick someâ€Â.

I won’t spend a lot of time on the ports. We’ve been to them several times, and didn’t do any excursions. We went ashore but stayed on our own. A noteworthy mention for “Headhurtâ€Â…We stopped at a bar in Cozumel because I heard the “Ketchup Dance†playing. No one was dancing to it, but I was betting if Heather was there…she would!

Some of the things we brought that really came in handy were, the booze, Purell, Lysol, alcohol-wipes, extension cord, 3-outlet cube-tap, lanyards, binoculars, duct tape, nightlight, wad of small bills(tip$) and extra cable-ties. ( I know–I know, the crockpot, blender, drillpress…etc.). Didn’t need a bungee cord because there was a hook-latch for the balcony door. Could have used a backlit clock.

There were no signs, or mention of Norwalk. The weather was fine, except for a little disturbance out of Key West on formal night. I was gonna pull a “Joebatâ€Â, and wear my life jacket to dinner, but I restrained myself and behaved. (“but they said...jacket & tieâ€Â).

Just as a cruise-critic test, I later asked my wife for both of us to think hard, and try to come up with anything we didn’t like about the ship, the service, the food, the crew, or the cruise in general. The best we could do was remark on the morning coffee not being as good as we’re used to, there’s no open deck that goes all the way around the ship, and the whirlpool bath jets were so strong, they almost blew us out of the tub. …. Ain’t life cruel?

If anyone is considering doing this ship, we highly recommend it and we give it “Two Thumbs Upâ€Â.

U.S. Customs tip: We were informed at the debarkation conference, that Customs agents would board the ship at 7am on debarkation day to collect payment on – or seize, over-allowances of duty-free stuff. I went to the library and talked to one of them. TIP: If you’re over the allowance on anything…like liquor or smokes…open it and consume “someâ€Â! Then you don’t have to list it on your declaration form. That’s a good thing to remember. Write it down. However, on this trip, turning in the customs declaration form to customs amounted to dropping it into a basket with 2000 others. But, in the past, I’ve also seen it go the real way too… you never know.

Debarkation, starting at about 9:30am, went as smoothly as boarding, and there were no delays. When I got to the terminal, amidst a sea of luggage, I could spot our bags a mile away. I had them plastered with bright red duct tape and a great big red-tape “YoRay†on the fronts & backs. I could have called the Travel Inn, where we stayed, and got a freebie to the airport, but didn’t want to wait, so we grabbed a cab ($18 flat rate-plus tip). For anyone considering early flights, consider this…we were cruising up I-95 to the airport, and came upon an accidentcene that stopped traffic dead. We were between exits and jammed in. A 45 minute delay. Then when we got to the airport, the line to our gate was backed-up, nearly to Cuba, with several hundred people. And gate security wasn’t taking any shortcuts. It took a good hour to move from the back of the line to the screening gate. We had a later flight, so we didn’t do that line. We went and, guess what?…Ate!

(sad part)

So now, the cruise is over. It’s just a mastercard memory. And as I sit, depressed, in my igloo on the frozen tundra of western Massachusetts, staring blankly at my “pazooter†- (oops, I mean computer…sorry Cathy), I find myself subconsciously, slowly, sadly, faintly, murmuring this tune….

“It was just my Imagination, running away with me.

It was just my Imagination, sailing away with me.â€Â

Yo Ray, thanks for the info. This was very informative. I love your humor! I've been looking for post regarding the Carnival Imagination, and it was slim pickings! I ran across your post, and was happy that I did. Or should I say, thanks to J & J's question. We plan to cruise on November 1. If you have anymore info that you can think of, please let me know. By the way, do you know where I can get pictures of the cabins, besides ordering catalog from cruise line?

Your help will greatly be appreciated.

Yo! Sher!

Travelocity.com has a pretty comprehensive cruise site that offers lots of info, including 360 degree videosweeps of the ships cabins and facilities. You just have to work your way through the site. Not bad!

Have fun!.....That's an order!

I love the Imagination--just the right size.

Here's a tip--don't miss the 5-headed showers in the gym. Very decadent.

Cheers!

J & J-
I just returned from the Imagination to Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios, Jamaica (my first cruise). Yo Ray's review was the best I found, too. THANKS Yo Ray!

If your friend is going to Grand Cayman or Ocho Rios, Jamaica, I can provide my experiences there. I agree that Travelocity or the Carnival sites offer the best views of the rooms and deck plans. My friend and I had cabin #U151 and were pleasantly surprised at how much room we had. We were very comfortable, but cruisers don't want to spend your time there, get out and join or watch the activities! The food was AWESOME! Gained 5 pounds, but who cares, it was WORTH it! Our dining room waitor was Zeljko from Croatia and assistant Eduardo. They were precious and spoiled us terribly. The games/game shows were hilarious. Karoako was great, too. The piano bar, especially sing-a-long, was fun. The casino was great if you like to gamble (my friends did). I suggest getting your picture made at every opportunity as you never know when you'll find one you can't leave behind (suggest checking the photo gallery everyday so as not to have to search through all photos at the end, that tip was helpful). Cruisediva.com has some GREAT first time cruiser info, helpful hints to avoid lines, etc. Suggest printing all their stuff out for your friend, including the packing lists. Tell your friend to have a GREAT time and feel free to holler with any questions!

Oh, one more thing, I'm not a shopper, but was found lots of huge deals that I couldn't pass up and wished I had brought more money for...on the ship and onshore! Definitely bring an extra, foldaway bag to carry your souvenirs and treasures home.

Hi djs-Yes, there were other teens, not LOTS since school was in session, but yes, there were teens. Yes, we did the ship's shore excursions. We're adventurous and wanted to experience everything to the fullest. In Grand Cayman we chose the Hell/Turtle Farm/Stingray City tour which was the highlight of the trip. Hell is a little place of stalactite rock formations that look just like what you would envision Hell would be. It's a neat photo and souvenir stop. I didn't think I would find the turtles interesting, but these big creatures were really cool to see, from the largest to the tiniest babies. Don't miss out catching one in the touch pools and getting pictures. The next stop was Stingray City. Our group boarded a snorkel boat and headed to the sandbar 15 mins out. There were probably 15 or so boats ranging an average of 20-30 passengers each there. Folks get in the water at the back of the boat and the guides help you to touch the rays, feed them, swim with them, snorkel with them, get GREAT underwater pix. It was AWESOME and I can't wait to do it again. In Ocho Rios, Jamaica, we took the Dunn's River Falls/Dolphin Cove Encounter tour. Climbing Dunn's River Falls with the tour group is a must. It's beautiful and an experience of a lifetime. The guides are really great. About Dolphin Cove, the jungle trail was neat allowing pictures with parrots, iguanas, boa constrictors and tasting their Jamaican coffee. The "encounter" consisted of standing on the pier and watching everyone else interact with the dolphins, swimming with them and touching them. All you get are pictures of the dolphins. If you're interested in a real dolphin experience, we suggest splurging for the swim with them. Some friends we met onboard said the garden tour and the plantation tours were really good, if you're into that kind of thing. Oh yea, we stopped at Margaritaville on the way back to the ship and WHAT A PARTY! Lots of fun with a pool, slide, dance floor and a real happening DJ.

My review of the Carnival Imagination 07-21-03 to 07-26-2003

Monday:07-21-03
Decided yesterday rather than taking 2 separate cars and driving ourselves from ft lauderdale fl to miami fl, to take a van with a driver from 1 of the many limo services. We were travelling with my 80 year old mother in law and this way we could sit back and relax and let someone else drive us to the port, all arriving at the same time and place. Decided on Ace Tours. They were the most reasonably priced and the owner even called me back with a better price. Great choice! The driver and van were at my M-I-L's at the correct time and the driver, Eddie, took us and all our bags from ft lauderdale to miami in a courteous and comfortable manner. We arrived at the port approximately 11:45 ish, earlier than we ever arrived before and I'm glad!!! I still don't understand why Carnival has no chairs to set in while waiting in this awful serpatine check-in line. especially if you are traveling with kids or seniors Fortunately, they had a lot of personnel working and the wait went fairly quickly and we were on board by 12:30PM ish . Great to be back aboard the Imagination.
We were 8 people. Me and my wife and 11 yr old son, my 26 year old stepson and his 22 yr old sister, my 80 year old M-I-L(for her 80th birthday), and my brother in law and his wife, all the way from Massachusettes. This was mine and my wife's 8th cruise, my son's 5th cruise, my M-I-L's 2nd(1st in 20 years however), my stepson's 1st cruise, his sister's 2nd, and my B-I-L and S-I-L's 1st. The lobby was pretty as ever. We explored the ship, went to see our cabins(everyone liked how big the cabins were and said they were larger than they expected), and then up to the Horizon Grille for some eats. The 24 hour pizza was serving and it was utilized at lot during the whole cruise. My son says it's better than Royal Carribean's. and I loved the chicken caesar salad. The fire drill went fairly smoothly, the baggage was there at the room timely and we had early seating for dinner.
Actually there are 2 early seatings and 2 late seatings. the first is at 5:45pm in the Spirit dinning room and the 2nd at 6:15pm in the Pride dinning room. The 3rd is 8:00pm in the Spirit DR and final is 8:30PM in the Pride DR. We had the 6:15PM time slot and it was perfect. Our table was along the window and it was just the 8 of us. Isn't it wonderful to eat at a table next to the window where you can eat and look out at and enjoy the ocean? I love it! We had 2 women as our wait staff and THEY WERE WONDERFUL!!!. We even tipped them extra even over and above the amount that is standard. If you have a sail and sign card(register your credit card and use the ship's card for shipboard purchases), they automatically now bill your card $9.75 per day per person, to cover tips for the wait staff, the cabin steward staff, etc. The food as usual was fabulous. Every evening I ordered a cold soup as an appetizer. I don't have them regularly but i really enjoy them on the cruises. The 1st night was Gaspacho.Yummy and Spicey! I had a delicious steak and everyone loved their meals. My S-I-L is a gourmet cook and they were very impressed with the meals and the service. At night we walked around and then saw the welcome aboard show. The whole week the rest of my clan was usually impressed with the food, the service, the shows, etc and they all appeared to have a wonderful time. Monday was my M-I-L's 80th birthday and the wait staff came over with a cake and sang a lovely rendition of Happy Birthday.
My 11 yr old spent a lot of time with his 26 year brother and slept next door in my M-I-L's cabin with her, and it gave my wife and I lots of time alone together with no worries. It was wonderful and restful. My son this time spent no time at all at camp carnival so i am unable toevaluate that, this time.
The disco seemed to have a lot more kids in it, even after hours, and we spent little time there. My wife and I enjoyed the shows, tho one we had seen before. I guess you can't cruise 3 times in 1 year and not get some repition. Small price to pay. Shows were good and when not, I napped(yes, during the show).
Mrs. Meziggy and I did a lot of walking, around the ship,on the olympic track, and up and down the steps. In fact, we never even stepped into the elavator. Great eating but great exercising meant gaining only 1 pound this whole trip:)

Tuesday, 07-22-2003(meziggy's sister's birthday)

Day at Sea. Our kids, young and old, hung out and swam together. Mrs. meziggy and I walked the track in the morning. then we ate breakfast in the dining room, and then we relaxed in the hot tub or read in the sun. After a few hours, roasting in the sun, we went on the side of the ship, in the shade(my favorite place), and read and slept.
We went to the Captain's cocktail party and the free drinks and hor d'oerves were yummy. Mrs. meziggy and I each had 2 lobster tails which were YUMMY!!!
In no particular order, the dinners were all yummy, again, esp the cold soups, the Prime Rib, steak, escargot, lobster and lobster newburg, baked alaska, cherries jubilee, tarimisu, et al. However, the sausages for breakfast was better on the S/S Norway.
One thing different. heading west each night, we were instructed to set our clocks back 1 hour monday night and 1 hour tuesday night. so the Gala Buffet was Tuesday night, the longest night?. Beautiful Gala Buffet, as always.

Wednesday, 07-23-2003. In Belize.

Belize SUCKED! That's the best I can say about it. We had to tender to Belize and it was all stores for shopping built especially for tourist. We decided not to take a tour and after reading some posts on the Board about the water taxis to Caye Caulker, we decided to do that. BIG MISTAKE! The water taxi was only $15.00 per person but we had to pile onboard and the taxi ride was not 20-30 minutes..it was 45 minutes. However, 1 of our boat's engines blew and it took an HOUR to get to the Caye, which is in the middle of no man 's land in the Caribbean Sea. not a great place to lose an engine. Then, we only had time to walk to what is supposed to be the best area to sunbathe and swim, at "the split". The split was the "PITS". Broken cement piers and hard cement "beaches" that people laid on for sunning. We wasted 1 1/2 to 2 hours there. The stores, what there were of them, refused to give change in US dollars and with the Belize dollar worth 50% of the US dollars, we ended up with a hungry 11 yr old as we didn't want to break more 20 $$ bills to be stuck with Belizean funny money! We got the water taxi after a little wait and then came the 45 minute ride back. fortunately, the water taxi driver dropped us off at the tender area and we didn't have to wait long to go back to the ship. Mrs. meziggy and young son went up immediately to the pizzeria upon arriving back on the ship. My advice about Belize is plan a better trip or don't leave the ship!
The most enjoyable thing about the day was the dancing on pool deck under the stars, at night, with the calyso band playing. Gosh, I love listening to and dancing to, the steel band music, and doing so at night, outside, under the stars is so much fun!!!
We then started heading east, and had to set our clock ahead 1 hour.

Thursday, 07-24-2003 Another fun day at sea. Mrs. Meziggy and I walked in the a.m. on the olympic track and then headed up on deck for another fun day of sunning, shading, and napping! We had to turn our clocks ahead 1 more hour again, so we were now back to correct Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

Friday, 07-25-2003 Key West.

Everyone had to report to clear US immigration and that was a pain. Necessary I understand but a pain none the less, as there seemed to be no organization and the line wrapped around and around and it was not until they made more US customs agents available did we finally make progress. They have GOT TO GET A BETTER SYSTEM for this necessary
event.

Living in florida and cruising, i have been to key west several times so i had no desire to see it again and I stayed on the ship the whole day.
I stayed a little with my son and then he and Mrs. meziggy went into town again. I watched everyone who got off the ship, shuttle back and forth, while i read and relaxed and napped some more in my shady chaise lounge. Boy, did I do a lot of napping and no worrying on this entire cruise. IT WAS WONDERFUL! Dinner was delicious and we said goodbye to our wonderful wait staff, Claudia and Tara. They kept the ice tea glasses and chocolate milk glasses full the whole cruise and were always sweet to us all, from my 80 year old M-I-L to my 11 year old son.

We caught a few of the kareoke's this trip, which were fun and the late night "comedy" acts, which for the most part weren't. These so called comedians were nothing more than loud screaming and cursing acts and I guess people feel if you talk about anatomy parts and use the "F" word enough, anything becomes funny. Hey, I am not a prude and can toss the curse words around with the best of them, but I am also a big fan of comedy, and believe me, these people were not funny and this was not comedy.

Debarkation...BOO HOO. the one word us cruise addicts hate to hear. Not bad tho. Ate breakfast leisurely and then we all waited on the promenade deck. the debarkation was by colorcoding based on luggage tags issued according to where your cabin was. This time, as we left the ship, Carnival employees were on borad to collect from us our Sail and Sign cards, which was disappointing, as I like to save mine as mementoes.we waited but not unduly long. we got our luggage fairly quickly and then waited for our driver from Ace tours. The driver was there about 15 minutes or so later(lots of traffic) and we were in our house by 11:45a.m.

This concludes my book report entitled "What I did on my cruise on the Carnival Imagination from 07-21-03 to 07-26-2003." Everyone had a wonderful time and now...bring on the Carnival Triumph, 11-08-2003, our next cruise!!!

Hope this helps some cruisers who are thinking about taking or have already
scheduled, a cruise on the M/S Carnival Imagination.

take care and happy cruising everyone.
